About The Position

The IT Business Analyst Intern supports the IT Department by helping translate business needs and opportunities into clearly defined, actionable technology projects. The intern will work directly with employees, managers, department leaders, and IT resources to understand business processes, identify pain points and opportunities for improvement, gather and document requirements, define project scope, develop preliminary level-of-effort estimates, and establish measurable success criteria. This internship provides hands-on exposure to business analysis, process improvement, and IT project planning while contributing to the continued development and maturation of the Company’s IT roadmap. Projects may include workflow and process automation, system integrations, and reporting and data initiatives. This individual should consistently demonstrate Integrity, Gratitude, Excellence, and Leadership.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a (2) two-year or (4) four-year undergraduate degree program
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening. (George J. Igel & Co., Inc. is a Substance Use Prevention and Recovery Drug-Free Workplace and tests for marijuana)
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a Motor Vehicle Record that satisfies the Company’s insurance requirements
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to break down complex or loosely defined business problems into understandable components
  • Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to ask thoughtful follow-up questions to develop a complete understanding of a business process or need
  • Strong listening and interviewing skills, including the ability to engage effectively with employees, managers, and department leaders
  • Ability to observe business processes closely and identify details, exceptions, dependencies, and process variations that may not be immediately apparent
  • Ability to organize information and translate conversations and observations into clear, accurate, and actionable business requirements
  • Ability to understand and document business processes, workflows, handoffs, decision points, and data requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including presenting information to individuals and groups
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with employees at various levels and across different functional areas of the Company
  • Ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and accurately interpret written materials
  • Ability to remain highly organized, detail-oriented, and accurate while managing multiple responsibilities and projects

Responsibilities

  • Meet directly with employees, managers, and department leaders to understand business processes, needs, challenges, pain points, and opportunities for improvement
  • Conduct structured stakeholder interviews to gather and document business requirements, process details, exceptions, desired outcomes, and other relevant information
  • Observe business processes being performed to validate information gathered during stakeholder interviews and identify steps, handoffs, workarounds, decision points, exceptions, data requirements, and other nuances that may not be identified through interviews alone
  • Reconcile differences between documented and observed processes and conduct follow-up discussions as needed to develop an accurate understanding of the current state
  • Create clear current-state process maps and workflow documentation
  • Assist in defining future-state processes and workflows based on identified business requirements and project objectives
  • Translate business needs and process observations into clear, organized, and actionable business requirements
  • Develop project scope documentation that clearly identifies the business problem, project objectives, requirements, assumptions, dependencies, constraints, and anticipated outcomes
  • Work with assigned IT resources to develop preliminary level-of-effort estimates for proposed projects
  • Work with business stakeholders to define measurable success criteria for projects, including what problem is being solved, the desired business outcome, and how project success will be evaluated
  • Identify and document project dependencies, risks, business impacts, and other information necessary to support project planning and IT roadmap decisions
  • Prepare project summaries and other documentation needed to move business requests from initial ideas to well-defined, actionable projects
  • Assist the IT Director with organizing and maintaining information related to the Company’s IT project roadmap
  • Support requirements gathering and project definition activities for initiatives including workflow/process automation, system integrations, and reporting/data projects
  • Present findings, requirements, process documentation, and project scope information to stakeholders and IT team members for review and validation
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and up-to-date project and requirements documentation
  • Learn and effectively use appropriate business-analysis, process-mapping, and documentation tools
  • Learn and adhere to all Company policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
