About The Position

Under general supervision the Irrigation Specialist is responsible for the programming, installing, operation, maintenance, and repairs of the park irrigation systems including modification of existing systems and equipment. Responsibilities include providing lead guidance and direction to assigned staff. The employee works with considerable independence and is responsible for making decisions requiring sound judgement and familiarity with District policies and procedures.

Operation of motor vehicles and/or power equipment with intermittent vibration
Must be at least 18 years old
Two years of experience in irrigation system operation
Completion of a certificate program from an accredited college, university, or trade school in the park irrigation systems or related field may substitute for the required experience
Upon hire, candidate must complete training for Rainbird Maxicom and Backflow Test Certification
Valid California Driver’s License
Insurable under District policy

Responsibilities

Plan, schedule, perform, train, and assign irrigation system related work.
Supervise and assist in the install, repair, and maintenance of irrigation systems by digging trenches, laying pipe, and connecting sprinkler heads and other related equipment in order to make water more efficient.
Operates, maintains, and monitor irrigation software database including Rain Bird IQ and Maxicom software; troubleshoot and resolve issues.
Research to compile and assemble data to produce statistical, historical, and analytical documents regarding water consumption.
Maintain current knowledge of technological advances for irrigation systems and coordinate with staff and consultants for upgrades, system maintenance, and repairs to ensure uninterrupted service.
May water tees, greens, and fairways at golf course.
Adjust sprinkler heads for proper ground height and distribution patterns.
Purchases sprinkler system parts, components and supplies needed by following the District procedures.
Programs flow monitors, controllers, and other computerized irrigation equipment.
Assists with special construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
Monitors water consumption and makes adjustments to maximize water efficiency.
Resolve wasteful water complaints and irrigation problems.
Reads and understands blueprint plans, schematic diagrams, and manuals.
Inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure that it meets required standards.
Tests, understands, and repairs the operation of backflow assemblies.
Hand waters dry areas as needed to supplement automatic irrigation system.
Monitor proper operation of irrigation systems and report problems to supervisor.
Purchases and maintains inventory of parts, supplies and equipment. Allocates expenses to proper accounts and exercises fiscal responsibility in regards to budget.
Operates tools, equipment, and other specialized machinery necessary to perform job duties.
Works and operates equipment following safety procedures and uses safety equipment.
Performs operation of motor vehicles and/or power equipment with intermittent vibration.
Prepares and maintains written daily records including required documentation reflecting parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of maintenance equipment.
Complies with Southgate Recreation & Park District Occupational Injury & Illness Prevention Program. Reports safety and sanitary hazards to the Parks Manager.
Follows oral and written instructions.
Works harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.
