The Infection Prevention Nurse (IP Nurse) - RN - Part Time is responsible for planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, coordinating, and directing the infection control program in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern such requirements in nursing care facilities. This role ensures the facility adheres to CDC, OSHA, and local regulations concerning infection control and standard/universal precautions. The IP Nurse develops and maintains infection control precautions and aseptic techniques, interprets policies, and maintains a reference library for infection control materials. They also make reports and recommendations to the Administrator, assist departments in identifying tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids, and monitor infection control practices. The position involves making rounds to nursing units for case findings, reviewing environmental sanitation, and supervising isolation precautions. They ensure laboratory support is available, review infectious disease reports, and consult with the Director of Nursing Services on care plans. Responsibilities include developing guidelines for decontamination and sterilization, performing periodic testing of sterile packs and equipment, monitoring shelf life of medical items, and ensuring proper disposal of infective materials. Monthly summaries of infections and corrective actions are prepared and submitted. The IP Nurse also prepares summaries of special investigations, maintains records of nosocomial infections, participates in surveys of possible carriers, and assists with infection control procedures for laundry and environmental services. They participate in facility surveys, assist with discharge planning for isolated residents, and help develop and implement a facility-wide TB management control program. Reporting of reportable diseases to health departments and performing administrative duties are also key functions. The role includes serving on and representing the Infection Control Committee, assisting in revising practices, establishing criteria for identifying exposure risks, and providing reports on nosocomial infections. They ensure major changes in cleaning products/techniques are approved by the committee and assist in evaluating recommendations. Information regarding TB assessment and isolation protocols is provided. For personnel functions, the IP Nurse develops systems for detecting, evaluating, recording, and reporting infections among facility personnel, and assists the personnel director with the employee health services program, including individual counseling and information on hepatitis B vaccinations. They also assist in establishing TB Mantoux testing protocols, orient new employees to infection control policies, and report occupational exposures. Regular meetings with staff to identify and correct problem areas, and maintaining good working relationships with department directors and the medical community are essential. They review complaints, report suspected fraud, and ensure computer workstations are secured. In nursing care and consultation, the IP Nurse participates in resident admission interviews, ensures nursing staff follow isolation precautions, and interviews residents/families to explain precautions. They make rounds with physicians, encourage timely documentation, monitor medication passes for proper hand hygiene, and review nurses' notes for isolated residents. Direct nursing care and obtaining culture samples are also part of the role. For staff development, they develop and maintain an orientation program, assist in in-service training, and help develop annual OSHA and CDC training programs. For equipment and safety, they recommend equipment and supply needs, ensure adequate stock levels, assist in preventive maintenance, and develop procedures for efficient supply use and proper labeling of contaminated equipment. In care plan functions, they assist in developing and maintaining care plans for residents on isolation or infection control precautions, encourage resident participation, and ensure all involved personnel are aware of the care plan. They review nurses' notes and revise care plans as necessary, fostering a team effort in resident care. For budget and planning, they assist the Director of Nursing Services in budget preparation and recommend adjustments based on economic conditions. They also report suspected fraud related to billing or kickbacks. For safety and sanitation, they identify and classify tasks with potential exposure to blood/body fluids, assist department directors in developing policies to prevent disease spread, and ensure personnel performing such tasks receive appropriate training. They ensure adequate supplies of personal protective equipment are available and assist in developing policies for handling and disposal of needles, sharp instruments, and infectious waste. Miscellaneous duties include assessing new products/procedures and providing confidential counseling for employee testing mandates and exposure reports.
