About The Position

American Public Media Group (APMG) is seeking a talented and analytical Manager of Venture Investments to support our media startup investment portfolio and assist in our inorganic growth strategy. This role will work closely with the Director of Venture Investments and APMG’s CFO to manage the $10 million Horizon Fund, help identify and research M&A opportunities, and assist in launching and managing the planned Vertical Fund for Local News. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial analysis, a keen interest in media innovation, and an understanding of the local news landscape. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in venture investing while contributing to APMG's mission of strengthening local news ecosystems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in financial analysis, investment banking, or related roles.
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical skills.
  • Excellent research and due diligence capabilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial analysis tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Interest in media, journalism, and emerging technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • MBA or advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in venture capital or private equity.
  • Knowledge of media business models and revenue strategies.
  • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities in local news markets.
  • Understanding of program-related investments (PRIs) and alternative investment structures.
  • Experience with or interest in public media.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the existing $10 million Horizon Fund, including financial analysis of potential investments and monitoring of portfolio companies.
  • Support the fundraising and launch efforts for the planned Vertical Fund for Local News
  • Conduct research and due diligence on potential investment and M&A opportunities in early- and growth-stage media and technology companies.
  • Prepare financial models and valuation analyses for potential investments and M&A opportunities
  • Lead proactive sourcing and networking with founders and venture partners to secure new investment opportunities
  • Help monitor industry trends and market conditions to inform investment decisions.
  • Assist in preparing regular reports on fund performance and portfolio company progress.
  • Support the Director of Venture Investments in relationship management with portfolio companies and potential investees.
  • Collaborate with the Glen Nelson Center team on innovation initiatives related to media and journalism.
