About The Position

The Senior Associate, Venture Capital supports the evaluation, execution, and ongoing management of venture capital investments, both co-investment and venture fund opportunities. Working closely with the Managing Director, the role is responsible for conducting financial, company and industry due diligence; financial modelling; assessing returns; preparing investment recommendations; and monitoring portfolio performance. The position requires strong analytical skills, investment judgment, and communication skills. This role is integral to the Manulife Investment Management (MIM) Venture Capital team, in assessing new transactions, monitoring portfolio companies and developments in targeted industries. The MIM Venture Capital team is focused on mid stage and growth stage business software investing in North America. This position will take a lead in industry research, deal assessment, valuation, and comprehensive due diligence of a wide variety of business software opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Commerce, Computer Science, Engineering, Science or other relevant degree
  • Have 6 to 8 years, or more, of relevant experience with established tech or startup firms, investment banking, venture capital, private equity, and/or consulting.
  • Strong interest in new tech and trends, early-stage startups and venture investing.
  • Demonstrated project and time management skills in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Solid experience using Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the completion of in-depth company due diligence, including analyzing the startup software firm itself, its market, competitors and growth opportunities.
  • Assess software firms for the quality of the underlying technology, appeal of the solution, and ability to scale and capture market share.
  • Assist in the preparation of investment memo material, summarizing the investment opportunity and analysis of the team, product, market, competitors, financial model and returns.
  • Complete proactive market research to identify potential investment opportunities.
  • Meet with software startups and venture funds, and attend local and industry events, as needed.
  • Complete annual reviews on the performance of the existing venture portfolio.
  • Other tasks as required.
