About The Position

HilltopSecurities is seeking an Associate to join its Higher Education & Nonprofit Advisory practice in the New York office. This position will primarily support colleges, universities, academic medical centers, foundations, and other nonprofit organizations with strategic financial advisory services, capital planning, debt management, and public finance transactions. The Associate will work closely with senior bankers and advisors to analyze institutional financial performance, evaluate financing alternatives, develop client recommendations, and execute tax-exempt and taxable debt transactions.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, Mathematics, Engineering, Public Policy, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in public finance, higher education finance, nonprofit finance, investment banking, financial advisory, consulting, or a related analytical field preferred.
  • Demonstrated interest in higher education, nonprofit organizations, public finance, and capital markets.
  • Strong financial analysis, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; municipal finance and debt modeling experience is a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, build effective client relationships, and work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to integrity and client service.

Responsibilities

  • Work with senior advisors and investment bankers to evaluate the financial position, capital plans, and financing needs of higher education and nonprofit clients.
  • Assist in the structuring and execution of tax-exempt and taxable debt financings, including new money, refunding, and restructuring transactions.
  • Perform financial analysis, debt modeling, capital planning assessments, and other quantitative analyses using spreadsheet and industry-specific software packages.
  • Analyze institutional operating performance, balance sheet strength, enrollment, fundraising, endowment, and other key financial and operating metrics.
  • Prepare financial advisory recommendations, proposals, and presentations for current and prospective clients.
  • Support client relationship management and business development efforts, including participation in client meetings, presentations to governing boards and rating agencies, and industry conferences.
  • Monitor developments in higher education, nonprofit finance, municipal markets, and credit trends affecting clients.
  • Pass the FINRA Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam, Series 50, 52 & 63 within three (3) months of hire; the firm will provide support and resources to assist with preparation.
