About The Position

The Investigator will play a crucial role in supporting the legal defense of clients by gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, conducting surveillance, and performing case analysis. An investigator locates and discovers information about individuals, cases, financial matters and other circumstances for use in defending an individual charged with a criminal offense. Work includes interviewing witnesses and other sources for information.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of criminal investigation goals and objectives, principles and practices.
  • Strong investigative skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods and techniques commonly employed in interviewing individuals who may be resistant and/or hostile to providing information.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficient in using investigative tools, databases, and technology.
  • Skilled in conducting interviews, surveillance, and case analysis.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, precedents and regulations.
  • Skill in the determination and location of information about the whereabouts of missing persons.
  • Associate's degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two to four years investigations' experience in a law enforcement, criminal justice or related organization.
  • A criminal background check may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough investigations of criminal cases, including interviews with witnesses, victims, law enforcement officers, and other relevant individuals.
  • Collect, preserve, and document evidence for trial preparation.
  • Analyze case files to identify potential evidence, witnesses, and case weaknesses.
  • Conduct fieldwork and visits to crime scenes, accident locations, or other significant areas related to the case.
  • Assist attorneys in preparing case strategies by providing factual information and insights gained during investigations.
  • Interview potential witnesses, experts, and individuals with information pertinent to a case.
  • Prepare witness statements, summaries, and reports for the defense team.
  • Locate and subpoena witnesses as needed.
  • Gather physical evidence, documents, and other materials that support the defense's case.
  • Work with forensic experts or law enforcement agencies when necessary to analyze evidence.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all investigative activities, interviews, and evidence collected.
  • Prepare comprehensive investigative reports for attorneys and maintain an organized system for case files.
  • Work closely with defense attorneys, paralegals, and other legal professionals to ensure all case aspects are thoroughly investigated.
  • Attend meetings, hearings, and court appearances as necessary to assist the defense team.
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality standards and ethical guidelines.
