About The Position

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Investigator within its Legal Bureau. The Legal Bureau serves as in-house counsel, assisting members of service in interpreting laws, representing the Department in civil matters, producing records and video footage, reviewing contracts, and assessing policies for legal sufficiency. This Investigator role is available in two units: the Body-Worn Camera Unit and the Subpoena Litigation Unit. The Body-Worn Camera Unit handles legal issues related to body-worn camera video releases, including searching, reviewing, and conducting preliminary investigations of footage, applying necessary redactions, and producing footage in response to various requests (government agencies, FOIL, criminal/civil discovery). The Subpoena Litigation Unit is responsible for processing, reviewing, and responding to subpoenas, court orders, and motions for records served upon the Department, as well as responding to record requests from other governmental entities.

Requirements

  • Permanent in the Investigator title or must have passed civil service exam, Exam No. 2083
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and two years of satisfactory, full-time experience as an investigator evaluating credit worthiness, searching for assets, verifying information concerning education, experience, and other personal qualifications bearing upon character and fitness for employment; or performing investigations involving the research, compilation and/or location of evidence or information in order to build a case or uncover activities of a criminal, corrupt, unlawful or unethical nature.
  • An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
  • Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 semester credits, from an accredited college, for one year of full-time experience.
  • All candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing and intaking requests from the public and government agencies for NYPD body-worn camera footage.
  • Utilizing various NYPD systems and applications to assist in the processing and investigation of requests.
  • Examining responsive footage and applying appropriate redactions and edits in accordance with all applicable laws and Department policies.
  • Reporting results of body worn camera video review to unit supervisors.
  • Analyzing and intaking subpoenas, court orders, and outside agency requests for NYPD records.
  • Utilizing various NYPD systems and applications to assist in the processing and investigation of requests.
  • Examining responsive records and applying appropriate redactions in accordance with all applicable laws.
