About The Position

New York County Defender Services is looking for an investigator. Investigators are responsible for assisting all NYCDS attorneys in compiling a defense based upon information gathered through fieldwork. Using their investigatory skills to aid the superior legal representation of our clients and assist in helping NYCDS meet all of its contractual obligations to The City of New York.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 2- 5 years relative work experience preferable.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, MS Excel and MS Word.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize work.
  • Aptitude to meet stringent deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to conduct confidential and sensitive investigations.
  • Ability to work with a team as well as individually.
  • Social media navigational skills.
  • Secure Pass to be obtained once hired.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and working knowledge of the Internet.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to exercise sound judgement and an ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to manage multiple working relationships with professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluent in foreign languages
  • Working knowledge of the following databases: TLo, Nexus Lexus, Webcrims, google data bases to gather information and background checks on witnesses.
  • A familiarity with criminal justice system considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist defense attorneys in compiling a defense based upon information from defendant, defendant's family, friends, witnesses and even complaining witnesses who wish to recant complaint.
  • Contact and interview witnesses
  • Perform fact-finding interviews of witnesses
  • Perform field visits to businesses, residence and other contacts to locate possible video footage of alleged incidence.
  • Extraction of video when granted permission by custodian of video cameras at incident scenes.
  • Identifying who to subpoena for records, video, recordings and any other reasonable request attorneys may need for court proceedings.
  • Process service of subpoenas on individuals, municipalities, hospitals.
  • Use of various databases to gather information and background checks on witnesses
  • Periodically, investigators will be asked to assist with or provide testimonials in criminal court hearings
