About The Position

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is seeking a self-starter with an interest in background investigation and a desire for career growth. The Human Resource Division (HRD) provides human resource services to supervisors, managers, and employees. The Investigator 2 position is responsible for completing complex and detailed background investigations of all agency applicants in a timely manner. This role involves conducting household and neighbor interviews, investigative follow-up, managing files, and corroborating information with other investigators. Maintaining high-quality background investigations is critical to assist hiring managers in making important hiring decisions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalence.
  • Prior Law Enforcement with interviewing/investigative experience.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and maintain superior work ethic without direct supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidential material in a manner prescribed by department policy and law.

Responsibilities

  • Function as an impartial investigator of varying difficulty and complex cases.
  • Confer with background investigators in developing investigative strategies for each applicant and ensure those strategies are consistent with WSP Hiring Standards and comply with applicable state and federal laws.
  • Receive and provide guidance as needed to other background investigators.
  • Researches, analyzes, and evaluates information from multiple sources.
  • Conduct detailed field investigations which include interviewing applicants current and former employers, personal references, and neighbors.
  • Gathers, reviews, evaluates records from other agencies as needed to include Law Enforcement agencies.
  • Complete case summaries, detailed logs, and reports.
  • Forward all reports to an Investigator 3 for review.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations as needed.
  • Receive and review all background files assigned from an investigator 3.
  • Plan your investigative strategy.
  • Act as a primary backup to an Investigator 3 as needed.
