About The Position

The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. This is a career filled with purpose. The Inventory & Store Specialist III – Food Service performs moderately complex stock and recordkeeping work to include clerical duties and filling special requests for food items for outings, parties and other special occasions. Works a designated shift in Food Service under the general supervision of the Director of Food Service with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Work involves maintaining proper inventory levels and stock records; receiving, rotating and stocking supplies and food items which would include counting, lifting and moving heavy food supplies in Ingredient Control Room, walk-in coolers and walk-in freezer; and issuing those items as needed. This position does not supervise other personnel. Completion of work requires use of established methods and/or techniques, and decisions are simple and based on well-defined guidelines. The Inventory & Store Specialist has no financial responsibility, but is responsible for assigned property.

Requirements

  • Ability to use a handheld device for the purpose of managing warehouse stock and receiving goods.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Skill in use of operating a computer using inventory control and receiving software.
  • Knowledge of warehousing methods and procedures, of inventory and stock control record keeping, of automated inventory-control systems, of reporting procedures, and of departmental policies and procedures
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. daily and be able to lift, stock and rotate food items in freezer for up to 2 hours daily.
  • Skill in the use of mechanical lifting devices used in warehouse operations to move, transfer and deliver goods.
  • Ability to review warehouse rules, regulations, and policies for compliance and to follow departmental policy instructions for inventory control guidelines.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess valid Texas driver’s license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent.

  • Work experience in inventory control and material handling equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attends Work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
  • Reads menus and computes all food requirements so that food items and quantity are ordered as needed.
  • Inspects all food items upon receipt and checks against purchase order in order to account for all food deliveries.
  • Adjusts recipes based on current consumer population count and maintains a standardized recipe file in order to provide accurate meals for consumers and limit food waste.
  • Weighs and loads all food items for each day onto the correct rack in order to provide appropriate stock for meal production.
  • Computes all food items needed daily including bread, milk, and chip requirements according to the menu, working closely with Food Service Managers.
  • Plans and performs stock storage and rotation for convenience of handling and prevention of deterioration, spoilage, or contamination in Ingredient Control Room, all three walk-in coolers and the walk-in freezer.
  • Prepare food requests for outings to include sack lunches, snacks, items for pre-placement visits and birthday/holiday celebrations.
  • Clean Ingredient Control Room daily using guidelines/requirements by Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER). Assist in cleaning produce cooler, thawing cooler and milk cooler.
  • Performs monthly inventory of food items and record information using Computrition.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
