About The Position

This position serves as an Interpreter within the Family & Student Support/School Division. The Interpreter will be an active member of the students' educational team, facilitating communication and supporting the full interaction of students. Key responsibilities include rendering messages faithfully, previewing curriculum, attending meetings, signing and voicing communication, and working with teachers to ensure accessibility of educational content. The role also involves instructing students, staff, and parents about the role of an interpreter and the social, emotional, and cultural aspects of deafness.

Requirements

  • Hold a valid certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or pass the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at level 3.5 or higher within five years preceding the date of application.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree or higher in any field from a Ga-PSC accredited institution.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Exceptional integrity, commitment to confidentiality, excellent character, and strong professional reputation.
  • Must abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
  • Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Must perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • One year experience as a freelance or school interpreter is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Be an active member of the students’ educational team and understand the educational goals and daily objectives for students on the caseload.
  • Facilitate communication and support the full interaction of students.
  • Render message faithfully, including class lectures, discussions, tests and other activities by conveying the content and spirit of what is being communicated, using language most readily understood by students.
  • Preview curriculum materials and/or confer with regular classroom teacher and the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) teacher in order to accurately interpret information and vocabulary presented.
  • Attend IEP meetings.
  • Attend school staff meetings as directed.
  • Sign all verbal communication as well as environmental sounds when appropriate.
  • Voice all signed communication when appropriate.
  • Work with the classroom teacher to ensure that all educational content, language and visual information are accessible to the students.
  • Adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct as outlined by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the EIPA Guidelines of Professional Conduct of Educational Interpreters.
  • Provide tutorial assistance for the (DHH) students as needed and agreed upon by the classroom teacher, DHH teacher and interpreter.
  • Facilitate communication between hearing and deaf students as appropriate.
  • Orient classroom teachers about the role and responsibility of the interpreter in conjunction with the DHH teacher.
  • In conjunction with the D/HH teachers, instruct students, staff and parents about the role of an interpreter including information about social, emotional and cultural aspects of the deaf.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
