About The Position

This position is responsible for listening, understanding and translating spoken or written statements and translate them into English. The Interpreter facilitates effective communication between two parties that do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken or written language to another to mediate discussions. Attends conferences and meetings and acts as official translator. Translates for residents so they can understand center officials. Relays concepts and ideas between languages. Converts written materials from one language into another, such as books, publications, or web pages. Creates a new text that reproduces the content and style of the original. Edits and proofreads text to accurately reflect language. Receives and submits assignments electronically. Uses dictionaries and glossaries for references. Utilizes computer-assisted translation. Facilitates communication for residents with limited English proficiency. Translates at meetings such as attorney-client meetings, preliminary hearings, arraignments, depositions and trials. Interprets both legal terminology and colloquial language. Reads aloud documents in a language other than that in which they were written. Provides language services to healthcare residents with limited English proficiency. Translates resident materials and informational brochures issued by medical facility. Accompanies resident and facilitates communication between receiving party and visitors. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent or greater.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate between Spanish, K’iche, and English.
Above average interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels within the facility, in addition to a variety of outside customers with varying interests.
Excellent writing skills. Must be able to thoroughly and effectively document all work performed in the position.
Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
Must possess an active, valid driver's license.
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
Must be a United States Citizen.

Nice To Haves

Experience as an interpreter or translator working with children or adolescents in a social services setting is highly preferred.
