About The Position

Prisma International, Inc. (Prisma) is a language services provider seeking experienced Court-Certified Interpreters to join their team of independent contractors. The role involves providing simultaneous and/or consecutive onsite or video remote interpretation services to Prisma clients in California. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in specialized topics such as legal matters, water board hearings, science, engineering, and health. The ideal candidate will be able to provide interpretation for non-English speakers with state government representatives, review background documents, utilize virtual interpretation tools like Zoom, and operate specialized equipment such as sound booths and interpreter control units. Key skills include effective communication, maintaining professional demeanor, adhering to ethical standards, and managing conversational flow.

Requirements

  • Court-certified in California or U.S. Federal Courts (will be asked to provide a copy of certification).
  • Full fluency in English and the other language.
  • Two years of onsite/video remote simultaneous interpreting experience.
  • Three professional references who can confirm your status as a court-certified interpreter.
  • Trained or accredited through a higher education institution.
  • Minimum age: 18+ years or older.
  • Minimum education: High School Diploma.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience interpreting specialized topics: legal matters, water board hearings, science, engineering, and health.

Responsibilities

  • Provide simultaneous and consecutive onsite & video remote interpretation for non-English speakers with a state government representative.
  • Effectively review and understand all necessary background documents prior to assignments.
  • Use virtual interpretation tools (e.g., Zoom).
  • Use tabletop sound booths, interpreter control units, FM transmitters, and headset/receivers.
  • Employ polite forms of expression, clear enunciation, and a high level of customer service.
  • Ensure correct concepts and meanings are conveyed between the speaker and the Limited English Proficient (LEP) speaker.
  • Maintain correct grammar, clarity, and tone between English and the other language.
  • Follow the speaker’s direction, professionally interject when clarification is needed, and manage the flow of a conversation.
  • Refrain from side conversations with the LEP and entering into any disagreement with the customer or LEP.
  • Maintain a professional appearance, polite demeanor, and punctuality.
  • Comply with applicable ethics and standards.
