About The Position

The Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney is one of the nation's largest municipal law offices, with over 1,000 legal professionals, including 500 attorneys. The Office provides the City of Los Angeles with high-caliber legal services, including prosecuting criminal misdemeanors, playing a leading role in criminal justice reform, advising on homelessness initiatives, defending civil lawsuits and claims, and bringing civil enforcement actions. The Office seeks collaborative team players who understand that fulfilling its mission is key to making a positive impact. The Office of the City Attorney invites students currently enrolled in high school, an undergraduate program, a master’s program, or law school (1L, 2L, or 3L) or in an LLM program to consider them for an internship. Opportunities are available in various branches and divisions of the office. Law clerk applicants may qualify to be a certified law clerk.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in high school, an undergraduate program, a master’s program, or law school (1L, 2L or 3L) or in an LLM program.
  • Commit a minimum of 16-hours a week up to a full-time schedule of 40-hours a week.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal services to the City of Los Angeles.
  • Prosecute criminal misdemeanors.
  • Play a leading role in criminal justice reform.
  • Advise on homelessness initiatives.
  • Defend civil lawsuits and claims.
  • Bring civil enforcement actions.
  • Act as the lawyer for departments, elected officials, and city commissions.
  • Interpret the city charter.
  • Represent the city in civil litigation.
  • Work with city departments on risk management issues.
  • Defend the city in workers' compensation cases.
  • Advise neighborhood councils and other city bodies on meeting procedures.
  • Review the description of each branch and division.
  • Commit a minimum of 16-hours a week up to a full-time schedule of 40-hours a week.
