About The Position

This internship offers hands-on experience in a veterinary setting, focusing on surgical preparation, patient monitoring, and general practice support. Interns will assist veterinarians and clinic staff with a variety of tasks, including client communication, medical record maintenance, and maintaining a clean and organized clinic environment. The role involves direct animal handling, performing basic veterinary procedures, and supporting both surgical and general practice workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cats and dogs for surgery, including answering client questions during check-in and check-out.
  • Monitor animals during surgery and recovery.
  • Perform standard vet tech duties as directed by the Veterinarian, Site Supervisor, and Clinic Manager.
  • Communicate with customers via phone and in person regarding medications, anesthesia, vaccinations, surgical issues, and post-operative instructions.
  • Prep, monitor, and move patients throughout the surgical workflow with a strong emphasis on staff and patient safety.
  • Properly handle animals at all times during movements between areas and while restraining them.
  • Perform basic palpation, shaving, sterilizing, expressing bladders, and intubation for surgical preparation.
  • Maintain proper medical records, including surgical records, prescriptions, and drug logs.
  • Monitor recovering animals.
  • Clean kennels according to Texas Litter Control’s cleaning standards.
  • Make sterile surgical packs.
  • Monitor equipment and report any problems to the Executive Director.
  • Perform laundry and mopping duties.
  • Maintain proper stock of supplies in all clinic areas.
  • Provide veterinary exams, diagnostics, and prescriptions/refills in general practice.
  • Provide excellent customer service to clients and their pets.
  • Greet customers and answer phones as needed.
  • Book appointments and print admission forms.
  • Answer questions about services and pricing.
  • Fill prescriptions.
  • Perform adoptions for cats/kittens in the lobby.
  • Clean cat cages in the lobby and keep the lobby clean at all times.
  • Keep the storage closet organized.
  • Draw blood, administer fluids, give injections, and examine specimens under a microscope.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
