About The Position

This internship focuses on providing hands-on experience in a veterinary setting, with a strong emphasis on surgical preparation, monitoring, and post-operative care. Interns will also support general practice duties, including client communication, diagnostics, and administrative tasks. The role requires adherence to clinic standards for animal handling, medical records, and sanitation.

  • Ability to move about to coordinate work within observation rooms.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time (in excess of 5 hours).
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and crouching.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cats and dogs for surgery, including shaving, sterilizing, expressing bladders, and intubation.
  • Answer questions from pet owners during check-in and check-out regarding procedures, anesthesia, and post-operative care.
  • Monitor animals through surgery and recovery.
  • Perform standard veterinary technician duties as directed by the Veterinarian, Site Supervisor, and Clinic Manager.
  • Communicate with customers via phone and in person about medications, anesthesia, vaccinations, and surgery-related issues.
  • Prep, monitor, and move patients throughout the surgical workflow, prioritizing staff and patient safety.
  • Properly handle animals at all times during movements and while restraining.
  • Perform basic palpation.
  • Maintain proper medical records, including surgical records, prescriptions, and drug logs.
  • Monitor recovering animals.
  • Clean kennels according to Texas Litter Control’s cleaning standards.
  • Make sterile surgical packs.
  • Monitor equipment and report problems to the Executive Director.
  • Perform laundry and mopping duties.
  • Maintain proper stock of supplies in all clinic areas.
  • Support General Practice Veterinarian with exams, diagnostics, and prescriptions/refills.
  • Greet customers and answer phones as needed.
  • Book appointments and print admission forms.
  • Fill prescriptions.
  • Perform adoptions for cats/kittens in the lobby.
  • Clean cat cages in the lobby and keep the lobby clean at all times.
  • Keep the storage closet organized.
  • Draw blood, administer fluids, give injections, and examine specimens under a microscope.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
