About The Position

The International Risk Manager supports the institution's safety and compliance by managing travel-related risks that could affect students, faculty, staff, or the University’s operations and reputation. The position reports primarily to the Director of Education Abroad with a secondary reporting line to the CSU Chief Risk Officer. Leading the review and implementation of travel risk policies, protocols, and training, the role is essential to addressing evolving geopolitical, health, legal and environmental risks worldwide. The position serves as the go-to role for international risk management questions from faculty, staff, and students as well as acts in emergency response support for international incidents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of professional progressively responsible work experience in the field of international education or risk management.
  • Demonstrated experience and engagement with international education.
  • Minimum of two years of experience with risk mitigation planning and crisis response.
  • Evidence of strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience leading orientation programs, trainings or workshops.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact with a wide range of people at all levels of an organization, including culturally diverse communities.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years administering programs at a college or university.
  • Experience supervising and training students and/or professional employees.
  • Experience creating or implementing an Emergency Response Plan to support an organization larger than 100 individuals.
  • Demonstrated leadership through broad institutional outreach or active involvement in international education and/or risk management associations.
  • Experience using TerraDotta software or similar application management software.
  • Experience living, studying, or working across cultures or within an international setting.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the University’s international risk management processes by updating, implementing, and maintaining policies, procedures, emergency response plans, and guidance for international travel.
  • Advise students, faculty, and staff on international travel risk management, including risk assessment, mitigation strategies, emergency planning, and compliance with travel requirements.
  • Manage higher-risk travel review and approval processes, including coordinating the International Travel Oversight Committee (ITOC) and providing recommendations on travel proposals and petitions.
  • Oversee international travel registration and compliance processes for departmental/college-managed, ensuring students and program leaders complete required approvals, training, documentation, and pre-travel requirements.
  • Coordinate international insurance programs and renewals, including collating renewal data, applications, claims data, managing vendor relationships, negotiating coverage, reviewing policies, and providing recommendations for coverage decisions.
  • Manage employees international travel authorization process.
  • Develop and deliver training, orientations, and educational resources on health, safety, risk mitigation, and emergency response for students, faculty, and staff participating in international programs.
  • Monitor global health, safety, and security conditions and provide guidance and decision support using information from government agencies, insurers, security providers, and professional networks.
  • Collaborate with campus and external partners to support international health and safety initiatives, including incident management, Clery compliance, policy development, behavioral risk assessment, research safety, and program evaluation.
