About The Position

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools. The IB Program Department Head is a school-based leadership role responsible for the pedagogical direction, compliance, operations, and administrative oversight of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. The IB Program Department Head acts as the liaison between the school, the Regional Centre for Education (RCE), and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). This position ensures alignment between Nova Scotia Public School Program (PSP) guidelines, Department of Education directives, and rigorous global IB standards and protocols. In addition to IB Program Department Head duties, this position has a teaching component.

Requirements

Hold a valid Nova Scotia Teacher’s License (minimum of ITC/TC5).
A minimum of 3 to 5 years of successful classroom teaching experience in a secondary environment, with explicit experience instructing Pre-IB or IB DP courses within the last 7 years, is required.

Nice To Haves

A Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Leadership, Curriculum Studies, or an equivalent graduate degree is preferred.
Documented completion of official IBO-approved training workshops is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Act as the sole official channel of communication with the IBO regarding regulations, program evaluation, curriculum updates, and fee structures.
Coordinate the annual registration of diploma and certificate candidates via IB Information System (IBIS). Manage all data uploads, internal assessment submissions, predicted grades, and transcript requests.
Manage the end-to-end administration of the external May examination sessions. Securely store examination papers, build invigilation schedules, and enforce absolute testing integrity in strict accordance with IBO regulations.
Enforce school-level policies required by the IBO, including the Academic Honesty Policy, Language Policy, Inclusive Education Policy, and Assessment Policy.
Lead high school IB teachers in aligning Nova Scotia Department of Education course outcomes with IBO curriculum frameworks.
Audit teaching certifications and schedule mandatory IBO-approved professional development (Category 1, 2, and 3 workshops) to preserve the school's authorized status.
Conduct department meetings to foster Approaches to Teaching and Learning (ATL) skills across the humanities, sciences, and mathematics.
Ensure the program aligns with CBVRCE diversity and equity goals by supporting educational services in an environment that values diversity and promotes acceptance and respect.
Organize recruitment strategies, host parent/student information nights, and oversee the admissions panel for incoming Grade 10 Pre-IB and Grade 11 Diploma candidates.
Increase program participation so it better reflects the diversity of the school community.
Supervise and track student progress across the central IB Core: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
Monitor student mental health, manage academic workloads, and coordinate individualized scheduling solutions for multi-program or dual-credit learners.
Administer the local high school IB budget, overseeing student exam fees, annual institutional fee payments, and specialized resource procurement.
Audit text, lab equipment, and library acquisitions to ensure compliance with the IBO's program validation parameters.
