About The Position

Upstate Veterinary Specialties is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) to join our Internal Medicine team. Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a Licensed Veterinary Technician
  • Graduate of an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association veterinary technology program
  • Current credentialed or licensed Veterinary Technician
  • Strong independent technician skills
  • Consistent and effective phlebotomy and venipuncture techniques
  • Competency in sedation and anesthesia
  • Ability to calculate medication doses, CRIs, and fluid rates accurately
  • Strong diagnostic and patient monitoring skills
  • Ability to multitask while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Confidence working independently and making informed decisions
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress or emotional situations
  • Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment
  • Professional and positive communication with clients, teammates, managers, and hospital staff
  • Highly dependable with a strong work ethic and commitment to teamwork
  • Ability to lift and carry patients or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ years of veterinary specialty experience preferred
  • Internal applicants must be deemed a Level 2 Technician or higher based on the UVS leveling structure
  • Experience handling emotionally charged cases and communicating with clients during stressful situations

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality nursing care to hospitalized patients with complex medical conditions
  • Work independently while utilizing strong core technical skills
  • Place IV catheters and perform venipunctures
  • Calculate and administer medication doses, CRIs, fluid additives, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian
  • Monitor patient status and differentiate between stable and critical patient vitals
  • Perform patient treatments and maintain accurate treatment records
  • Perform sedation and anesthesia for diagnostic and procedural services
  • Accurately calculate medication doses, fluid rates, and anesthesia protocols
  • Perform and assist with sedated procedures and anesthesia as needed
  • Run in-house laboratory diagnostics and prepare samples for outside laboratories
  • Perform platelet counts, PCVs, manual differentials, and cytology
  • Obtain diagnostic-quality radiographs and assist with ultrasounds when needed
  • Obtain and document thorough patient medical histories
  • Review and collect medical records for transferred and referred patients
  • Maintain accurate medical records, treatment sheets, patient rounds, and care notes using Instinct veterinary software
  • Communicate important patient information clearly during technician handoffs and rounds
  • Fill and appropriately handle pharmaceutical medications, including controlled substances
  • Educate clients on treatment plans, medications, disease processes, and home-care instructions
  • Create and review treatment estimates with clients and answer associated questions
  • Perform patient admissions and discharges as needed
  • Work closely with doctors and the Internal Medicine team to support efficient workflow and patient care
  • Assist with training and supporting new team members
  • Participate in department meetings, hospital initiatives, and process improvement projects
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, patient care, and the overall client experience
