About The Position

The New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF) is offering an internship designed as a structured learning experience to introduce emerging leaders to abortion access work within a rapidly evolving reproductive justice landscape. Interns will support the intake team as it responds to increasing demand for services and the diverse, time-sensitive needs of callers seeking financial assistance for abortion care, including those traveling from out of state. The intake team consists of a Program Director, Intake Manager, Intake Coordinator, and a network of over 70 volunteer case managers who manage NYAAF’s call lines. Interns will gain supervised exposure to client-centered, trauma-informed support and will assist with administrative components of intake work that help ensure callers are connected to care efficiently and respectfully. This internship is rooted in NYAAF’s commitment to reproductive justice and serves as a way for the organization to invest in a new generation of thoughtful, ethical, and community-minded leaders.

Requirements

  • Be living and working in New York State for the duration of the internship.
  • Be over the age of 18.
  • Demonstrated passion and knowledge of Reproductive Justice Frameworks.
  • Access to a personal computer and reliable Wifi.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite.
  • Commitment to data sensitivity.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Strong racial justice analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • Lived experience accessing abortion or experiencing barriers to reproductive care.
  • Strong New York roots.
  • Current student at NY state college or university.
  • Being bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to building on our comprehensive list of pre- and post-abortion resources that can be used to support callers more effectively.
  • Support monthly intake data, examine and communicate trends in caller needs alongside the Director of Programs to help inform future resource development and programming.
  • Assist with the audit and update of clinic information in Penny, our case management system, to ensure our records remain accurate and current, including contact information, services offered, gestational limits, pricing, insurance accepted, payment policies, and any other details related to the clinic experience.
  • Occasionally provide direct caller support including sending solidarity pledges.
  • Support the organization’s efforts to expand and maintain digital security protocols, including monitoring and clearing email accounts, participating in digital security meetings, and staying up to date on best practices and relevant updates in the field, especially those affecting reproductive justice organizations.
  • Maintain and update our volunteer information, including tracking number of completed shifts and supporting communications with volunteers who have not completed a shift.
  • Assist staff in updating and developing resources, such as scripts, manuals, and guides for case management.
  • Join movement advocacy calls and convenings.
  • Participate in and support ongoing political education.
  • Support volunteer events and intake trainings as needed.
  • Attend in-person rallies and events on behalf of NYAAF as available and interested.
  • Participate in regular check-in meetings with the Intake Manager and intake team.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and retreats with full staff (held both virtually and occasionally in-person in NYC) to engage with the broader team and better understand our ongoing work and organizational culture.
  • Attend various trainings, webinars, and take notes to share out to NYAAF staff.
  • Other tasks as assigned and needed.

Benefits

  • Stipend: $4,500-6,000 based on schedule.
