Baxter offers a robust summer internship program based in the Chicagoland area that provides meaningful work assignments that immerse students in Baxter’s culture. The internship program is designed to provide practical work experience with the ability to make a business impact, highlighting what an individual would do in a similar full-time role. You'll be paired with a mentor, receive support from your manager, and have access to the entire Baxter employee community to ensure your success. This summer internship is within the research and development (R&D) team within the Baxter Pharmaceuticals business segment. This team works to identify a robust pipeline of new drug, device, and combination products that meet patient unmet needs and bring value to our customers. Project scope can be very broad, but will support design or remediation of pharmaceutical solutions, delivery devices, and/or container closure systems to help grow and sustain our portfolio of injectable products. Interns will be assigned to specific tasks in support of new product development activities or on-market support of existing products. Responsibilities typically involve a combination of literature research, laboratory work, and data analysis. The intern will be responsible for their individual project but will work in collaboration with Baxter team members internal and external to the R&D function. The intern will work with the assigned mentor and manager throughout the summer, culminating in a written project summary and final presentation at the end of the internship. Requirements

  • Proven academic performance and leadership potential.
  • Combine technical and business knowledge with analytical strength and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Rising Junior or Senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Physics.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and problem-solving skills.
  • Positive attitude, team-oriented, adaptive to change, and collaborative.
  • Actively involved in campus or community activities and organizations, preferably in leadership roles.
  • Candidate to be local to the Round Lake, IL office.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct technology evaluations and investigate the feasibility of potential opportunities for the Baxter Pharmaceuticals business.
  • Work under the direction and with the guidance of Baxter engineers and scientists.
  • Perform literature research and laboratory prototyping and testing.
  • Communicate ideas and findings to the Pharma R&D organization.
  • Understanding, unlocking, and experimenting with new instruments for the determination of Molecular Weight and other parameters.
  • Studying complex intravenous formulations, with a broad range of molecular species to be characterized.
  • Investigating the effects of various conditions (formulation pH, thermal treatment, excipients) on the data.
  • Playing a supporting role in two simultaneous feasibility efforts which will culminate in the Entry to Development stagegate.
  • Updating manufacturing documents based on filter validation reports.
  • Attending R&D batches and supporting other team members in R&D projects on an as needed basis.
