About The Position

The Communications and Marketing internship is designed to create meaningful, hands-on experience in public transit communications. In this role, you will contribute to real projects that reach HVT's riders, community partners, and the public by contributing to content creation, social media management, internal communications, and community outreach from day one. Additionally, the intern will gain exposure to executive-level strategy and decision-making.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a college junior or senior (minimum 60 credit hours completed) at an accredited college or university.
  • Pursuing a degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, or a closely related field.
  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to write clearly, concisely, and engagingly for a variety of audiences and platforms.
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms and a basic understanding of digital content best practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills; comfortable engaging with the public and District leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with graphic design tools such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or Illustrator.
  • Prior experience with social media management, content creation, or communications in a professional or campus setting.
  • Photography or basic video production skills are a plus.
  • Familiarity with public transit, local government, or nonprofit communications, or desire to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Develop compelling stories that highlight HVT's services, community impact, and staff for use across digital and print channels.
  • Assist in creating graphics, infographics, and visual content using tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms.
  • Assist in managing HVT's social media presence across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.).
  • Draft and schedule social media content that is engaging and on-brand.
  • Monitor social media channels for comments, questions, and community engagement; flag items requiring follow-up.
  • Track basic social media metrics and contribute to monthly performance reports.
  • Support HVT's participation in community events, public meetings, and outreach initiatives by helping prepare materials, staffing tables, and attending events.
  • Help maintain and update HVT's community partnership contact lists and outreach databases.
  • Assist with internal communications including staff announcements and newsletters.
  • Maintain organized digital files for communications assets, media contacts, and campaign materials.
