This summer 2027 internship at Corning focuses on exploring unconventional processing methods to access novel glass compositions. The project will use IOM’s small-sample levitator coupled with a CO2 laser to melt glass at ultra-high temperatures and rapidly quench it, enabling compositions that are difficult or impossible to produce using conventional methods. Recently established optical characterization methods will be used to identify promising candidates, followed by hot pressing to produce bulk glass parts suitable for standard property characterization. The project aims to deliver new glass compositions relevant to AR applications and a new workflow for discovering novel oxide glasses. The position includes competitive salaries, housing assistance, travel reimbursement, social and networking events, volunteer opportunities, and community involvement. The position does not support immigration sponsorship.
