We’re looking for a Hardware R&D Research Intern to join our Research Operations team in San Francisco, with a dedicated focus on hardware research programs. Our Research Operations team designs and executes the human research studies that power Oura’s next-generation sensor development and scientific innovation and bolster our scientific credibility. The focus of the hardware research program is to develop and validate new features and continue to enhance the accuracy of our algorithms. As a Hardware R&D Research Intern, you’ll support internal and external human research studies that help develop and validate new Oura hardware and sensing capabilities. You’ll get hands-on experience across the study lifecycle — from equipment prep and lab setup to data collection and data quality checks.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student
  • Studying biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, human biology, neuroscience, physiology, computer science, or a related field
  • Has experience or coursework related to human subjects research, lab work, or experimental design
  • Is excited about a future career in wearable technology, sensors, and hardware R&D
  • Is comfortable working hands‑on with electronic devices and lab or test equipment
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail and a commitment to high‑quality documentation
  • Is proficient with Google Workspace tools and comfortable using iOS and/or Android devices
  • Is based in or able to be in San Francisco, CA for the summer and available for regular on‑site work for data collections

Responsibilities

  • Support hardware‑focused human studies: Assist with 1-2 hardware and sensing research studies under the guidance of Research Coordinators and Research Project Managers.
  • Prepare and maintain research equipment
  • Assist with setting up research equipment for both internal and external hardware research studies.
  • Perform equipment checks before sessions (battery status, firmware/app versions, connectivity, storage).
  • Help track and organize research equipment inventory, including labeling, storage, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Support study documentation and data quality checks
  • Contribute to protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and checklists for study visits and equipment handling
  • Assess and flag quality concerns related to device signals (e.g., missing data, motion artifacts, device non‑wear, connectivity issues)
  • Contribute to simple data review summaries (e.g., dashboards, spreadsheets) to monitor study progress
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional partners (e.g., Research Operations, Hardware, Data Science) to keep documentation organized and up to date
