Intern - Grid Resiliency Engineer
About The Position
The Grid Resiliency Engineer Intern will support Dominion Energy's Grid Resiliency organization with engineering, analytical, and project support activities associated with Voltage Optimization (VO) and related Grid Transformation programs. This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience applying engineering principles, data analytics, and electric distribution system knowledge to improve reliability, resiliency, operational performance, and energy efficiency across the distribution network. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers and program managers, the intern will assist with the analysis of distribution system data, identification of voltage-related opportunities, project development activities, and performance reporting. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineering, operations, planning, financial, and business intelligence teams to support the execution and tracking of Grid Transformation initiatives.
Requirements
- Must be working towards a Bachelor's or Master's Engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university.
- Must have a graduation date of Spring 2028 or later.
- Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Interest in electric utility operations, power systems, engineering analytics, or grid modernization initiatives.
- Ability to organize and analyze large datasets.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office applications.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Power BI, SQL, GIS, Python, data visualization tools, or engineering analysis software is preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn new technologies and engineering concepts.
- Coursework in power systems, data analytics, engineering economics, statistics, programming, or project management.
- Experience with engineering design projects, academic research, or technical team projects.
- Familiarity with data analysis, dashboard development, or electric utility concepts.
- Demonstrated leadership through academic, professional, or extracurricular activities.
Responsibilities
- Assist engineers in analyzing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) voltage data to identify voltage optimization opportunities and system performance issues.
- Support engineering evaluations related to voltage regulation, voltage quality, load balancing, conductor loading, transformer performance, and distribution system operation.
- Assist with project scoping activities for Voltage Optimization Enablement projects, including data gathering, engineering calculations, and development of project documentation.
- Support analysis using engineering and business systems such as EDGE, PI, GIS, Power BI, Synergi, and other utility applications.
- Help develop dashboards, reports, and presentations used to communicate Grid Transformation program performance and progress.
- Assist with tracking program metrics, project milestones, energy savings performance, and operational results.
- Support financial reporting efforts by helping collect and organize project cost, budget, and forecasting information.
- Participate in the review of system data and engineering models used to identify potential reliability and voltage improvement projects.
- Assist with preparing technical reports, presentations, and process documentation.
- Collaborate with engineers, technical coordinators, contractors, and operations personnel to support project execution activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to data quality, reporting, and engineering processes.
- Perform other engineering and analytical assignments as requested.
