About The Position

As the Fisheries Intern, you will support applied research and data analysis that contribute to Canada’s environmental bio economy, with a focus on fisheries, sustainable seafood, and marine ecosystems. This role involves designing and delivering a consumer awareness study related to seafood and food system sustainability and analyzing environmental and consumer data to inform science based recommendations that support the responsible use of aquatic biological resources. Please note this is a part-time, fixed-term contract with no guarantee of extension You are a curious and motivated early-career professional or student with a strong interest in marine science, sustainable seafood, and/or environmental research. You bring a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to data and are eager to apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges. You enjoy digging into research, synthesizing complex findings, and contributing to meaningful, science-based work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (completed or in progress) in marine science, fisheries, biology, environmental science, data science, or a related biosciences or sustainability discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in applied environmental or biological research, data analysis, or assessment of ecological or food system impacts.
  • Ability to review, synthesize, and interpret scientific literature related to fisheries, marine conservation, or seafood sustainability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data insights clearly to non technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with fisheries, aquaculture, environmental sustainability, or food system science concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and execution of a consumer awareness study to support Ocean Wise’s Fisheries and Seafood initiative and to strengthen understanding of program reach within Canada’s sustainable seafood and fisheries landscape.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze environmental and consumer data related to fisheries, seafood systems, and sustainability outcomes.
  • Contribute to the interpretation of findings to inform evidence based environmental and conservation strategies.
  • Opportunity to contribute to or co author a research publication or technical paper based on study results.
  • Assist in researching, reviewing, and synthesizing scientific and technical literature related to fisheries science, marine biology, seafood sustainability, and environmental impacts of food systems.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, data summaries, partner assessments, and sustainability evaluations.
  • Contribute to the development of science based recommendations that inform program strategy and decision making within Ocean Wise’s Fisheries and Seafood initiative.
