Intern - Data Science (Summer 2027)

GTI Energy•Des Plaines, IL
•Hybrid

About The Position

GTI Energy is seeking a Summer 2027 intern to join its Modeling and Energy Systems Analytics (MESA) Team. The intern will support enterprise-wide initiatives and ongoing projects involving scientific research, technology development, and low-carbon energy systems through data-driven modeling and analysis. Work may include exploratory data analysis, statistical modeling, machine learning, data visualization, energy systems modeling, and communicating findings to stakeholders. The intern may also contribute to research programs focused on methane emissions mitigation, digitalization in energy, and net-zero energy systems. The position is based at GTI Energy Headquarters in the Chicagoland area. The hybrid/core work week is remote Mondays and Fridays, with on-site work Tuesday through Thursday, subject to manager discretion. Some field travel to GTI Energy’s Fort Collins, Colorado office may be required; travel is less than 5%. Work may take place in laboratory, pilot plant, or technical facility environments and may involve prolonged standing or sitting, repetitive hand and wrist motions, exposure to noise and temperature variation, controlled chemical or mechanical hazards, lifting, stairs and ladders, and outdoor work in varying conditions.

  • Currently enrolled in, or completed within the last year, a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information clearly and usefully to nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with technical and nontechnical team members.
  • General knowledge of the energy industry, particularly the natural gas supply chain (including emissions management), hydrogen, energy efficiency, or engineering methods.
  • Willingness to learn new analytical techniques and data science methods.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong programming skills, preferably in R, Python, or similar software.
  • Ability to wrangle and process data using programming libraries such as tidyverse or pandas.
  • Familiarity with and ability to implement basic statistical analyses and concepts, including t-tests, linear regression, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals, and machine-learning techniques such as classification, clustering, and predictive modeling.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of energy policy and regulation.
  • Familiarity with or interest in environmental justice.
  • Familiarity with advanced statistical methods such as Bayesian analysis, time-series or spatial analyses, or survey statistics.
  • GIS experience and programming.
  • Experience communicating technical statistical or analytical concepts.
  • Experience using data visualization techniques and programming libraries, such as scatterplots, boxplots, ggplot2, pandas, or matplotlib.

Responsibilities

  • Perform exploratory data analyses and use statistical modeling and machine learning to answer research questions and develop tools for data-driven decision making.
  • Scrape and wrangle data from open-source repositories.
  • Create data visualizations and dashboards to communicate insights and findings to stakeholders.
  • Develop energy systems models that characterize interactions among energy supply and demand as affected by new technologies, climate, and weather.
  • Apply and develop advanced analytical techniques, including AI, computer vision, and neural networks.
  • Develop presentations and written reports to communicate findings.
  • Develop approaches to investigate research questions, including supporting programs related to methane emissions mitigation, digitalization in energy, and net-zero energy systems.
  • Support ongoing research efforts using a disciplined approach and standard best practices.
