About The Position

Ohio EPA is seeking a part-time environmental specialist for the Division of Air Pollution Control (DAPC) at the Groveport Field Office (GFO) in Franklin County. This role involves implementing DAPC’s quality assurance program for ambient air monitors in Central Ohio. The network of monitors measures air pollutants to ensure compliance with air quality standards that protect public health. The position requires operating monitors and related equipment, traveling to site locations daily, collecting and transporting filters for analysis, and performing repairs and maintenance. Additionally, the role involves auditing and calibrating monitors for accuracy and conducting field trials for toxics. In the field office, responsibilities include analyzing filters and sample data using precision lab equipment, and accurately entering data into agency digital platforms for transmission to U.S. EPA's air data systems.

Requirements

  • 3 years of training or experience in a position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology, hydrogeology, earth science, urban & regional planning, or other comparable physical or health science field, mathematics, history, or archaeology.
  • Experience must include determining environmental and economic effects of pollution, inspecting industrial facilities for pollution problems, or inspecting facilities for compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Training and/or experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • Applicants must be able to provide their own transportation for field work.
  • Federal Non-disclosure form must be completed by employee and approved by US Department of Homeland Security.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an undergraduate core program in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science, urban & regional planning, geology, or other comparable physical or health science field, mathematics, history, or archaeology with education commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • New employees in EPA's solid waste program (excluding the solid waste planning unit) must obtain a sanitarian-in-training certificate during their probationary period.
  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate continuous air monitors in Central Ohio.
  • Transport filter samples to a laboratory/collection site daily.
  • Provide on-site maintenance for air quality instruments.
  • Enter data for filter samples and transmit them to federal data systems.
  • Perform data analysis as needed.
