About The Position

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an Intermediate Nuclear Engineer Energy for a remote position based out of its Oak Ridge, Tennessee office. The role is described as requiring senior-level engineering capability and at least three years of nuclear engineering experience. The engineer leads and supports the execution, oversight, and coordination of nuclear engineering activities, ensuring technical deliverables, design interfaces, and nuclear safety information move effectively across engineering disciplines, project functions, and potentially external vendors. The role works within a multidisciplinary team and requires expertise in Small Modular Reactor (SMR) designs. The position integrates work across reactor core physics and neutronics, nuclear safety and analysis, criticality safety, radiation shielding, fuel-cycle operations, radioactive-material transportation, and software quality assurance. It involves use of nuclear analysis and particle-transport codes such as MCNP, SCALE/KENO, Attila4MC, and Serpent, as well as applying relevant US and international nuclear regulatory requirements and standards. The engineer supports US nuclear safety licensing, prepares and reviews technical and safety-basis documentation, and leads or approves criticality safety evaluations and analyses for fuel fabrication, handling, storage, and transportation. The role also develops and validates criticality safety limits and controls for SMR systems, supports the Criticality Safety Program, performs neutronics and radiation-transport analyses, and designs or approves radiation shielding. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree.
  • At least 7 years of engineering experience, with a record of reviewing, verifying, and formally approving other engineers’ technical work.
  • Experience authoring and approving nuclear criticality safety evaluations and analyses for fuel processing, storage, or transport.
  • Experience designing radiation shielding and performing radiation-transport and core-physics calculations.
  • Advanced hands-on proficiency with particle-transport and criticality codes, particularly MCNP and SCALE/KENO, or equivalent codes such as Attila4MC or Serpent.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable US nuclear regulatory frameworks, including NRC regulations 10 CFR Parts 50, 70, and 71, and ANSI/ANS-8 standards.
  • Knowledge of DOE orders, guides, technical standards, and directives concerning nuclear facility safety bases.
  • Experience authoring formal safety-basis documents, calculation packages, or regulatory submittals.
  • Experience working with integrated, cross-functional engineering teams, including interfaces with mechanical, thermal-hydraulic, or structural systems.
  • Strong communication and technical-writing skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry.
  • Direct experience modeling or licensing Small Modular Reactors or advanced fuel systems such as HALEU or TRISO fuel cycles.
  • Experience managing code verification, validation, and benchmarking under an ASME NQA-1 or equivalent nuclear quality assurance program.
  • Demonstrated experience with software quality assurance in a nuclear environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate technical work supporting US nuclear safety licensing activities.
  • Author, review, and approve technical documentation, including nuclear safety analyses and evaluation reports.
  • Support licensing initiatives by assisting with preparation of safety-basis documents.
  • Participate in hazard analyses, process design reviews, and configuration management activities.
  • Lead, execute, and approve Nuclear Criticality Safety Evaluations (NCSEs) and Nuclear Criticality Safety Analyses (NCSAs) for fuel fabrication, handling, storage, and transportation processes.
  • Establish and validate criticality safety limits and engineered or administrative controls for SMR systems, including controls involving mass, moderation, geometry, reflection, enrichment, and interaction.
  • Advance the development and maintenance of the Criticality Safety Program in alignment with ANSI/ANS-8 standards and applicable NRC and DOE regulations.
  • Apply validated neutronics methodologies and Monte Carlo codes such as MCNP and SCALE/KENO to assess margins to criticality, bias, and uncertainty.
  • Lead, perform, and approve radiation shielding designs and radiation-transport analyses for fuel fabrication, handling, storage, and transportation.
  • Analyze and interpret radiation data to ensure operational safety, shielding effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate nuclear engineering activities and technical interfaces across engineering disciplines, project functions, and potentially external vendors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
