Empire Life is looking to hire an Intermediate Underwriter to join our Retail Underwriting team! We are actively seeking candidates to fill a current, open position. Requirements

  • 2+ years work experience as an individual life underwriter
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet and database computer software
  • Well-developed knowledge of medical terminology
  • FLMI / FALU designation or currently working towards
  • Completion of a university degree in life sciences, nursing or kinesiology
  • Well-developed analytical and problem resolution skills
  • Ability to be decisive and show consistently good judgment
  • Well-developed organizational skills
  • Clear writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships
  • Attention to detail/accuracy
  • Language proficiency in English is required for communicating with customers, advisors, or employees across Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses risk in a timely manner to an approval limit of $1,500,000 for individual life and $500,000 for critical illness policies
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with potential and current clients
  • Provides sound risk decisions and related support to the Sales & Marketing and Retail business line teams
  • Assess the mortality and financial risk for individual life insurance products through an analysis of financial and medical information via paper-based, electronic and telephone underwriting
  • Provide support to the Sales team in the management of the distribution relationship
  • Interact with reinsurance providers to spread risk on retention amounts that exceed the Empire Life retention limit
  • Consult with Senior team members, Medical Directors, or Technical Lead and Senior Management on any questionable situations
  • Participate as an active team member for assigned projects
  • Review the work of junior team members and provide coaching as required
