About The Position

WSP has a new opportunity for an Intermediate Geotechnical Construction Materials Field Technician based out of our Markham (Steelcase office) location. This role offers the opportunity to further develop your technical expertise while working alongside like‑minded technicians, engineers, and professionals within a leading global professional consulting firm. As a Geotechnical Construction Materials Field Technician, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the quality and integrity of construction projects across residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional building sites, as well as major infrastructure projects that shape our communities.

Requirements

  • College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, preferably with a focus on geotechnical engineering.
  • 4–6 years of experience working as a geotechnical construction materials technician.
  • Strong knowledge of civil construction practices, drilling procedures (asset), and testing standards (CSA, ASTM, CCIL).
  • Proven ability to work independently in construction and laboratory environments while coordinating effectively with supervisors and project teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and contractors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint).
  • Valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle and appropriate insurance coverage; willingness to travel and accommodate overtime, night shifts, and weekends as required.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver technical services in both field and office environments to support geotechnical and construction materials projects.
  • Perform field Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) testing on soils, concrete, aggregate, and asphalt in accordance with project and industry standards.
  • Conduct soil and asphalt compaction testing to confirm compliance with specifications.
  • Carry out subgrade, footing, and construction site inspections and observations.
  • Lead and support subsurface investigations, including layout, supervising drill rigs and excavators, logging boreholes and test pits, sampling soil and groundwater, and preparing detailed site sketches.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and operate testing equipment to ensure accuracy, reliability, and safety.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers to troubleshoot and resolve field challenges while championing health, safety, and quality practices.
