About The Position

Chestnut Street Academy is seeking an engaging, collaborative, and student-centered Interim Grade 6 Math/Science Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. Chestnut Street Academy serves Amherst sixth-grade students in a dedicated sixth-grade program located within Amherst Regional Middle School. The Academy is designed to provide students with a supportive transition from elementary school to the increased independence, academic expectations, and opportunities of middle school. The Interim Grade 6 Math/Science Teacher will provide standards-aligned instruction in mathematics and science while supporting the academic, social-emotional, and developmental needs of sixth-grade learners. The successful candidate will establish an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom, use student data to inform instruction, and work closely with colleagues to create a cohesive sixth-grade experience.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Appropriate Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education educator license for the assignment; MA DESE Elementary, 1-6
Demonstrated knowledge of mathematics and science content and instructional practices appropriate for sixth-grade students.
Ability to use assessment data to differentiate instruction and improve student outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to establish an inclusive classroom environment and support students with a broad range of academic, linguistic, cultural, social-emotional, and developmental needs.
Strong communication, collaboration, organization, and relationship-building skills.
Commitment to educational equity and to maintaining high expectations for every student.
Ability to complete all state- and district-required background checks.

Nice To Haves

Massachusetts licensure or endorsements applicable to both mathematics and science instruction at the sixth-grade level.
Experience teaching mathematics, science, or both at the upper-elementary or middle-school level.
Experience working with sixth-grade students or supporting students during the transition to middle school.
Experience with inquiry-based science, project-based learning, interdisciplinary instruction, or hands-on STEM learning.
Experience implementing inclusive practices and collaborating with special educators, multilingual learner educators, and other student-support professionals.
Experience using restorative practices, tiered systems of support, and culturally responsive teaching strategies.
Familiarity with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Mathematics and Science and Technology/Engineering.
SEI Teacher Endorsement or the ability to obtain the endorsement as required by Massachusetts law.

Responsibilities

Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in Grade 6 mathematics and science.
Develop lessons that promote inquiry, problem-solving, critical thinking, scientific reasoning, and the meaningful application of mathematical concepts.
Provide hands-on and inquiry-based science learning experiences, including appropriate laboratory activities and investigations.
Use a variety of instructional strategies, technology, materials, and learning experiences to make content accessible and relevant to all students.
Differentiate instruction to address students’ academic strengths, learning needs, language development, and individual educational plans.
Integrate literacy, communication, and executive-functioning skills into mathematics and science instruction.
Maintain accurate lesson plans, instructional records, and student assessment data.
Use formative, summative, diagnostic, and performance-based assessments to monitor student learning and adjust instruction.
Analyze student work and achievement data individually and collaboratively to identify appropriate interventions, extensions, and instructional next steps.
Provide timely, clear, and constructive feedback to students and families.
Participate in school-based systems of academic and behavioral support.
Implement accommodations, modifications, and services identified in Individualized Education Programs, Section 504 Plans, English learner plans, and other student support plans.
Collaborate with special educators, multilingual learner educators, counselors, interventionists, paraeducators, and other staff to ensure students receive coordinated support.
Participate in student support, special education, Section 504, and family meetings as required.
Establish a safe, inclusive, affirming, and academically challenging classroom environment.
Build positive relationships with students and recognize the unique developmental needs of sixth-grade learners.
Establish clear routines and expectations that promote student responsibility, organization, self-advocacy, and increasing independence.
Use developmentally appropriate, restorative, and relationship-based approaches to classroom management.
Foster curiosity, perseverance, collaboration, and a sense of belonging among students.
Support students as they transition from elementary school into the middle school environment and navigate new academic and social expectations.
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and protect student confidentiality.
Work collaboratively with the Chestnut Street Academy instructional team to develop consistent expectations, routines, interventions, and family communication practices.
Participate actively in common planning time, professional learning communities, faculty meetings, professional development, and other collaborative structures.
Coordinate with Amherst Regional Middle School staff when students participate in shared programs, services, spaces, or schoolwide activities.
Communicate regularly and respectfully with families regarding student progress, strengths, needs, and available supports.
Build partnerships with families that recognize and respect their cultures, experiences, identities, and knowledge of their children.
Contribute positively to the development of Chestnut Street Academy’s culture, traditions, instructional practices, and school community.
Participate in school events, transition activities, and other responsibilities associated with the successful implementation of the sixth-grade Academy.
Perform other duties consistent with the role of a professional educator, as assigned by the Principal or designee.
