About The Position

The special education teacher coordinates and provides programming for children with disabilities, including instruction in academic, social language, motor skill development, and self-regulation. This role involves assessing student capabilities, designing and implementing individualized education programs (IEPs), conducting evaluations, collaborating with various educational professionals and parents, and ensuring compliance with special education regulations.

Requirements

  • DESE certification in moderate special needs is required.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in delivering co-teaching, 1:1, and small group instruction.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with children diagnosed with disabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in special education preferred.
  • OG certification preferred.
  • Leadership experience/skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the capabilities and skills of each assigned student for instruction and seek means to assist each student to learn effectively in the area assigned.
  • Design and implement programs for students eligible to receive Special Education services, including academic, social/emotional, and behavioral components.
  • Collect data and use data to create specially designed plans and guide instruction.
  • Conduct evaluations under Special Education Laws, including reviewing educational information, designing and administering assessments, preparing written reports, recommending strategies, and attending TEAM meetings.
  • Complete the paperwork process associated with special education, including the development of IEPs, timelines, and progress reports.
  • Advise and assist teachers in diagnostic and remedial measures for learning difficulties or social maladjustments, and provide/implement curriculum modifications.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, social worker, Team Chairperson, School Psychologist, specialists, other related service providers, and outside agencies.
  • Prepare and maintain records to facilitate information flow among staff and others.
  • Communicate and consult with parents to keep them informed of student progress and involve them in IEP goal attainment.
  • Develop a personal plan for professional development in collaboration with the Building Principal and Director of Special Education.
  • Attend all professional meetings scheduled by the Superintendent of Schools, Director of Special Education, or building Principal.
  • Ensure that all Massachusetts Special Education Regulations are followed and implemented.
  • Perform any other duties as requested by the Director of Special Education and/or building team chair.

Benefits

  • $125 per day including benefits.
  • Compensation in accordance with the Burlington Educators' Association Unit A collective bargaining agreement when the teacher comes off the salary schedule.
