About The Position

This position plays a pivotal role in maintaining relationships and communication at the local, state and federal levels. As well as communicating county priorities and initiatives while monitoring new legislative proposals that may impact county operations or service delivery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public administration, law, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in government relations, legislative affairs, or intergovernmental relations, preferably in a governmental or public sector setting.
  • Strong understanding of government structures, legislative processes, and policy-making at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex issues and advocate for county interests to diverse audiences.
  • Political acumen and strategic thinking, with the ability to navigate political environments and build consensus around policy priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze legislation, regulations, and policy proposals.
  • Project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, with a demonstrated understanding of how to integrate these principles into intergovernmental advocacy efforts.
  • Passion for public service and a deep commitment to representing Montgomery County's interests and priorities in intergovernmental forums.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for off-site meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies to build and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and key stakeholders at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for intergovernmental communications, facilitating coordination and collaboration between Montgomery County and external entities.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments at the local, state, and federal levels, analyzing their potential impact on county operations, priorities, and funding.
  • Advocate for Montgomery County's interests and priorities through direct engagement with elected officials, legislative staff, and government agencies, both in-person and through written communications.
  • Coordinate with county departments and elected officials to develop and advance legislative priorities, policy positions, and advocacy agendas.
  • Represent Montgomery County in intergovernmental meetings, hearings, and forums, presenting county positions, gathering information, and building partnerships.
  • Prepare briefing materials, talking points, and presentations for county leadership and elected officials on intergovernmental issues, legislative developments, and advocacy efforts.
  • Cultivate relationships with external stakeholders, including nonprofit organizations, advocacy groups, and industry associations, to advance shared policy objectives and leverage resources.
  • Track and report on legislative and advocacy activities, outcomes, and impact, providing regular updates to county leadership and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with county communications and public affairs teams to develop messaging and outreach strategies to support intergovernmental advocacy efforts.
