About The Position

ALCOSAN is committed to providing wastewater treatment services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From our Board of Directors to our Executive Director, leadership and staff; we work to enhance the community’s quality of life and safety by protecting our rivers and streams. After 60 years of continued design, construction and operations of the sewer system and treatment plant, we now have 400 plus employees serving residential, commercial and industrial customers in 83 communities throughout Allegheny County. Position Summary The Supervisor I (Intercept) is responsible for assisting the Interceptor Systems Superintendent in keeping the interceptor compliant to all regulatory agencies as well as supervising Interceptor Maintenance crews in daily tasks to ensure a safe, functional, and efficient Interceptor Sewer System.

Requirements

  • Extensive / Considerable knowledge of Interceptor Systems
  • Extensive / Considerable knowledge of Managing wet weather events
  • Some / Limited knowledge of Preventative Maintenance concepts and execution
  • Some / Limited knowledge of Safety - OSHA Rules and safe working practices
  • Ability to Communicate with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates — Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  • Ability to Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings — Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.

  • Ability to Think Creatively — Developing, designing, or creating new applications, ideas, relationships, systems, or products, including artistic contributions.
  • Technical school graduate or high school graduate with minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ supervisory experience or completion of a formal management training program

Responsibilities

  • Schedules daily work assignments for Interceptor Maintenance to ensure proper operations and avoid overflows.
  • Monitors jobs to insure compliance with Authority safe work policies and procedures.
  • Holds safety meetings to motivate and train personnel in Authority’s safety policies.
  • Analyzes sewer line problems to determine course of repairs and future prevention.
  • Advises the Interceptor Systems Superintendent as to training recommendations to keep employee skills current.
  • Assists the Interceptor Systems Superintendent with work order procedures as well as equipment, repair costs and labor reports.
  • Maintains records as to abnormal conditions and anticipates potential problems.
  • Collaborates with Engineering or consultants on system upgrades.
  • Inspects and monitors work areas, examines tools and equipment, and provides employee safety training to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules.
  • Examines objects, systems, or facilities and analyzes information to determine needed installations, services, or repairs.
  • Performs skilled repair and/or maintenance operations using equipment such as hand or power tools.
  • Counsels employees about work-related issues and assists employees to correct job-skill deficiencies.
  • Must be available / “On call” 24 hours to investigate emergency calls and to anticipate and inspect problems because of rain, snow melt, or other related conditions.
  • Performs other job-related duties as needed.
