About The Position

This position is responsible for working knowledge of general animal health, surgical procedures, and anesthesia. The role involves administering medications, performing diagnostic tests, maintaining medical records, and providing customer service. The Vet Tech will also be responsible for cleaning assigned areas and maintaining equipment. The position requires the ability to accurately evaluate animals for health and behavioral issues and to perform minor treatments as directed by a veterinarian. The role also involves providing humane education to customers and representing the Humane Society of North Texas with excellent customer service.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in a veterinary medical environment
  • Ability to learn proper intake procedures for canines, felines, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and other species
  • Knows and understands the differences in diagnostic testing and preventative care given for different age groups for a variety of species
  • Venipuncture
  • Administration of injections - SQ, IV & IM
  • Ability to place and maintain intravenous catheters
  • Ability to administer medications via all routes on a variety of species
  • Ability to perform and interpret fecal testing
  • Ability to perform and interpret superficial and deep skin scrape
  • Ability to use Wood’s lamp to detect ringworm
  • Ability to accurately age both canines, felines, and various other species
  • Ability to accurately sex canines, felines and various other species
  • Ability to identify altered status for males and females for canines, felines, and various other species
  • Ability to accurately document medical care and maintain accurate and complete medical records
  • Ability to identify a wide variety of illness and injury
  • Follow and respect the mission of the Humane Society of North Texas
  • Ability to meet physical demands including but not limited to using a step stool or ladder to reach top kennels or stooping and crouching to clean bottom kennels.
  • Ability to multi-task in high stress and swift moving environment
  • Ability to follow directions with attention to detail
  • Ability to complete tasks and assignments with minimal supervision accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to maintain respectful, positive working relationships with all employees at all times
  • Proper working knowledge of situational use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, animal handling and behavior
  • Ability to demonstrate safe proper animal handling and restraint
  • Ability to represent the Humane Society of North Texas in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, and staff
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Humane Society of North Texas, with volunteers, the public, and be a team player
  • Must be detail oriented and have strong time management skills
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to pass drug testing

  • Completion of Fear Free Shelter Program (including bonus courses) or ability to complete within 60 days of hire

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate medical records and record maintenance
  • Perform treatments as directed for animals in the care of HSNT
  • Perform physical exams on canines, felines, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds and other exotic animals
  • Proper and safe animal handling and restraint
  • Behavioral evaluations of animals in the care of HSNT
  • Provide professional, compassionate customer service and care
  • Proper handling, use, and storage of veterinary supplies, such as, but not limited to, vaccines, testing supplies and medications
  • Working knowledge of general animal health including TPR
  • Working knowledge of surgical procedures and instruments
  • Ability to administer and maintain general anesthesia
  • Working knowledge of controlled substances, safety, storage, and use
  • Ability to perform dental prophylaxis unassisted
  • Knowledge of radiographic positioning for various anatomical sites and ability to obtain appropriate radiographs
  • Ability to care for, feed, monitor, medicate and perform minor treatment on animals housed throughout the shelter as directed by veterinarian
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to Shelter Veterinarian, Intake and Wellness Manager, Asst. Manager
  • Clean assigned areas twice daily and as needed in compliance with standard operating procedures without error
  • Ability to evaluate animals accurately for health and behavioral issues with a wide knowledge of common injury and illness
  • Perform venipuncture, subcutaneous, intramuscular and other injections with skill and knowledge
  • Accurately perform diagnostic testing including but not limited to fecal testing, skin scrapes, heartworm testing, and feline leukemia testing
  • Perform minor treatments on shelter animals such as but not limited to administering subcutaneous fluids, placing intravenous catheters, administering oral medications, ect as directed by veterinarian
  • Provides humane education to customers with compassion and accuracy
  • Maintain medical documentation and records by completing exam notes, medication notes, behavioral notes, and procedures in accordance with the legal standard
  • Ability to maintain inventory of necessary medical and shelter supplies while reporting shortages to supervisors
  • Ability to maintain medical and shelter equipment, supplies in good working condition and report any problems or needed repairs to supervisor
  • Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service, compassion, accuracy, and focus
  • Protect confidential information
  • Report to work at assigned start time; go to/return from breaks and lunch at assigned times; leave work at assigned end of shift time
  • Additional tasks assigned by supervisor
