The Opportunity Aviva Canada Inc. has an excellent opportunity in our Small Medium and Enterprise (SME) commercial insurance business unit. Our Winnipeg branch is seeking Commercial Lines P&C Underwriter in an Intermediate level. This role is accountable for driving profitable growth through high-quality underwriting, with a focus on middle market and large commercial accounts across select industry segments. These accounts typically fall within the annual premium range of $25K to $250K. In this role, you will collaborate closely with internal partners to identify new business opportunities and deliver superior technical expertise to brokers and customers—ensuring risks are priced appropriately. You will also play a key role in mentoring and guiding junior underwriters. Requirements

  • 3+ years of P&C underwriting experience; CIP preferred or in progress.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting fundamentals, pricing, and policy wording.
  • Proficiency with underwriting systems, rating tools, and Microsoft Office.
  • Strong communication, relationship‑building, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage workload independently and apply underwriting guidelines consistently.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal Core & Mid‑Market P&C accounts within delegated authority, ensuring profitable growth.
  • Assess moderate to moderately complex risks and recommend terms, conditions, and pricing.
  • Prepare referrals for risks outside authority with clear recommendations.
  • Build and maintain broker relationships; participate in broker/insured meetings to support new business and renewals.
  • Monitor market conditions and apply underwriting guidelines consistently.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, portfolio quality, and compliance.
  • Support junior staff through basic coaching when needed.

  • The salary band for this position ranges from $60,000 to $75,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
