About The Position

UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary, fixed duration Insulation Worker to join their team. This position is expected to be a one-year assignment. Reporting to the Supervisor and Lead, the Insulation Worker performs journey-level skilled installation and repair of insulation products on various mechanical systems and facilities. The position supports the Maintenance & Construction (M&C) Health Sciences Zone (HSZ) Shop 17 Insulation Shop, which performs installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of insulation systems supporting the University's buildings, utilities and infrastructure within the Health Sciences Zone. The position works with other UW Facilities shops and business partners to support campus operations. This position is located within the Maintenance & Construction Health Sciences Zone (HSZ) Shop 17. This is a full-time position (not telework eligible), reporting to the Southwest Zone of the Seattle Campus.

Requirements

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an insulation worker; OR full journey status as an insulation worker in a union; OR four years of applicable experience OR equivalent education/experience.
Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.
Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills.
Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.
Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment.
Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.
Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.
Regular and predictable attendance is required

Nice To Haves

Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations.
Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.
Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
Ability to lift and heavy material may be required.
Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.

Responsibilities

Insulate domestic hot and cold-water lines, high- and low-pressure steam lines, chilled water and refrigerant lines, heat pump systems, roof drain lines, ventilation ducts, air conditioning systems, boilers, tanks and heat exchangers by application of fiberglass, calcium silicate and assorted petroleum by-product insulating materials.
Fabricate and repair custom fittings, blankets and specialty products from bulk/uncut insulation materials.
Operate and maintain hand power tools and equipment.
Remove and insulate non-asbestos insulation materials from facilities and equipment.
Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers.
Load and unload materials and supplies.
Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.
May instruct semi-skilled workers.
May develop cost estimates for installation and repairs.
Order material and supplies.
Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status and work progress, required project materials and equipment.
Work with lead to discuss any proposed project changes before construction.
Communicate and coordinate with other UW Facilities shops and other business partners such as Design Services, Capital Planning & Development and UW Information Technology to facilitate work.
Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community.
Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Safety Data Sheet (SDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Comply with all UW and UW Facilities policies and procedures, M&C protocols ( i.e., Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).
Support all management directives and the vision and values of M&C.
Participate in and follow through with M&C process improvement initiatives and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation.
Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.
