About The Position

The Instrumented Handling Test Engineer supports the Vehicle Dynamics development process by performing in-vehicle objective measurements. The selected candidate will be responsible for all aspects of vehicle testing including the coordination and planning of testing, in vehicle test execution, test equipment maintenance /calibration, data processing, analysis and test report generation, maintenance of test results database, refinement of test procedures, and support of global standards, processes, and analysis tools/templates. This position requires consistent adherence to test procedures for handling and stability control test. It involves in-vehicle dynamic limit handling. Travel outside SE Michigan is required, with expected total travel time of 8-14 weeks annually during the cold weather months in Michigan.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience
  • Experience in Chassis component, vehicle dynamics, or in-vehicle instrumented test experience
  • Experience in MATLAB; ability to modify, maintain, and write code
  • Comfortable in the control and operation of a vehicle at the limit of handling performance
  • Comfortable with robotic or software control in the operation of a vehicle
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Experience in data analysis, data mining, and trend analysis
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Excellent work ethic with ability to multi-task and manage changing priorities
  • Affinity for driving vehicles coupled with endurance for repetitive limit handling maneuvers

Nice To Haves

  • Instrumented Handling / Vehicle Stability Control experience
  • Proficiency in the control and operation of a vehicle at the limit of handling performance (3rd party driving qualifications / special use license from OEM proving grounds)
  • Operation experience with in-vehicle steering robots and GPS measurement platforms
  • MATLAB proficiency
  • Experience in subjective evaluation of vehicle ride, handling, and steering characteristics
  • Knowledge of tire characteristics and performance
  • Knowledge of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) roll over testing
  • Knowledge of FMVSS126 / ECE13H certification - Electronic Stability Control (ESC) performance
  • Background in automotive development including benchmarking, setting functional objectives, vehicle development, and production launch
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills along with excellent organizational skills
