About The Position

Under general supervision, the Instrumentation Technician Apprentice performs skilled apprentice level work. Work involves preventative and corrective maintenance, inspections, modifications, and installing/dismantling of systems and projects, as well as troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing municipal equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for inspecting the work of contractors, demonstrating sound judgement, and working toward reducing errors to prevent unsafe and deteriorated equipment, health and safety risks to the public, and liabilities to the municipality. This position is required to exercise a considerable degree of independent judgement, although the work is subject to inspection.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of, and experience with diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing instrumentation systems, components, and equipment.
  • Comprehension of schematics, blueprints, and piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Familiarity with maintenance and troubleshooting of industrial control systems and SCADA systems.
  • Ability to make complex decisions for which there may be no set procedure.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade and the ability to implement safe work practices including, but not limited to, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, read and interpret manuals, plans, and specifications.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Must have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • High degree of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient math, numeracy, and reading skills, including the ability to complete calculations using mathematical formulas or pre-established equations and read and understand specialized/technical manuals.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Registered as a third-year Apprentice in the Instrumentation Technician trade in Alberta.
  • Experience performing instrumentation installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and repair in an industrial or municipal environment is required.
  • Experience interpreting electrical, instrumentation, and process control schematics, blueprints, and piping and instrumentation diagrams is required.
  • Submission of a Criminal Record Check.
  • A valid Class five (5) Operator’s License is required as incumbent will be required to operate a personal or municipal vehicle for business use on a regular basis.
  • Must be willing to work outside in all conditions.
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Related experience in electronics/instrumentation repair and maintenance, and digital electronics or ladder logic programming is an asset.
  • Dual tickets are considered an asset.
  • Industrial training in Confined Space, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), Safe Work Permitting & H2S awareness considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective and planned maintenance, maintain, calibrate, inspect, test, troubleshoot, repair, analyze and diagnose a variety of systems and equipment relating to the trade.
  • Operates test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, frequency meters, signal generators, audio frequency generators, and tone generators and interprets readings.
  • Designs, fabricates, and installs new instrumentation systems.
  • Reads and interprets various blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Maintains equipment and calibration history logs, work order requests, testing results and prepares a variety of reports as necessary.
  • Explain and clarify Supervisory Controls and Data Acquisition (SCADA), process control systems, and maintenance to operators and maintenance personnel to ensure general understanding.
  • Operate various equipment related to the trade.
  • Respond to, troubleshoot, and find solutions for complex and unique issues with various types of equipment relating to the trade.
  • Respond to call outs and emergencies as required.
  • Strictly comply with related regulations and standards.
  • Complete field level hazard assessments (FLHAs) and incident reports as necessary.
  • Participate actively as a team member and support various health and safety, energy conservation, and operational cost effectiveness initiatives.
  • Participate in development of trade related preventative maintenance tasks and procedures.
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and direction to assigned helpers or apprentices as required.
  • Provide input into technical data, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Complete training and participate in the RMWB training program as required by operations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
