About The Position

The Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Technician supports safe, reliable, and efficient operations at Major Oak Power Station, a 305-megawatt lignite-fired power plant in Robertson County near Bremond, Texas. The station uses circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) combustion technology and emissions-control systems. The technician maintains, calibrates, tests, and troubleshoots plant instrumentation, control systems, and automation equipment supporting the CFB boiler, steam turbine-generator, combustion processes, emissions controls, and auxiliary equipment. The role also provides limited electrical troubleshooting support for instrumentation and control circuits and coordinates broader electrical work with Electrical Technicians. The position reports directly to the IC&E Manager and receives general direction from plant management. It works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Electrical Technicians, Engineering, contractors, and original equipment manufacturer representatives. The schedule is four days of ten hours each; extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, holidays, callouts, and on-call duty may be required. The work takes place in a power plant and may involve confined spaces, narrow areas, hazardous materials, fumes, extreme temperatures, noise, high heat, and varying outdoor weather. Physical demands include extended standing, climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment may be required, and respirator fit testing may be required. Employees participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, including a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Requirements

  • Experience in power generation or a comparable industrial environment, preferably involving instrumentation, process controls, industrial automation, or equipment troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of industrial instrumentation and control devices, including transmitters, sensors, control valves, actuators, analyzers, and related process-control equipment.
  • Ability to install, calibrate, test, maintain, and troubleshoot instrumentation and control systems in an industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with PLC, DCS, and SCADA platforms and their applications to boiler controls, combustion systems, burner management, steam turbine controls, equipment protection, and process monitoring.
  • Proficiency in interpreting instrument loop diagrams, electrical and instrumentation schematics, P&IDs, technical drawings, and equipment documentation.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical principles and control circuits, with the ability to perform limited troubleshooting within the role's scope and coordinate more extensive electrical work with Electrical Technicians.
  • Ability to evaluate equipment performance, interpret process data and alarms, identify potential causes of instrumentation or control-system failures, and support corrective actions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to maintain accurate technical records and coordinate maintenance activities.
  • Valid, unrestricted U.S. driver's license that remains in good standing.
  • Ability to meet the described physical requirements and participate in the Fitness for Duty Program.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Instrumentation and Control, Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • Equivalent technical training or relevant industrial or military experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Calibrate plant instrumentation and control devices, including transmitters, sensors, analyzers, control valves, actuators, and related field equipment.
  • Maintain PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, and associated automation equipment.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation and control systems for the CFB boiler, combustion processes, steam turbine-generator, boiler protection, burner management, equipment interlocks, and condition-monitoring systems.
  • Inspect, test, and maintain instrumentation, analyzers, and control components associated with emissions monitoring and pollution-control systems.
  • Provide limited electrical troubleshooting and maintenance support for instrumentation and control circuits, control panels, wiring, and related components within the role's scope; coordinate broader electrical repairs with Electrical Technicians.
  • Assist with installations, commissioning, outages, control-system modifications, and capital projects by verifying functionality, supporting tests, and coordinating work with relevant teams, contractors, and vendors.
  • Evaluate equipment performance, process readings, alarm conditions, and control-system data; identify developing problems, support root-cause investigations, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Complete work orders, calibration records, inspection reports, and other technical documentation; maintain applicable drawings, equipment records, and test instruments.
  • Follow safety procedures and environmental requirements, identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and handle hazardous materials and regulated waste according to applicable requirements.
  • Perform other duties, special projects, and technical assignments as needed to support plant operations.
