About The Position

Astoria Generating Company is looking to hire a highly motivated and dedicated professional to join Astoria Generating Station as an Instrumentation and Controls Technical Supervisor. The primary purpose of this position is to provide operational support of day-to-day production activities and support electrical maintenance activities. The ideal candidate will be involved in supervising the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of electrical devices in a power plant facility. Lead and supervise a team of skilled union technicians and ensure all work is performed safely, professionally, and in conformity with AlphaGen’s core principles and policies. Direct troubleshooting and repair activities of union technicians and enforce all contractual work requirements. Support the 24 x 7 operation of the facility when necessary. Will be required to be available on call to support start-ups, shutdowns, and normal operation. Conduct on-the-job training (OJT), effective job briefings, and documented job site safety exchanges. Plan and organize schedule work including Corrective, Preventive, and Conditioned-based Maintenance Coordinate with Transmission Operator in the testing and repairs of feeders, relays, and breakers, etc. Ensure technicians receive adequate training to effectively meet the requirements of their roles.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of applicable technical supervisory or engineering work experience including projects, planning, and administration.
  • Knowledge of power utility industry standards and process safety measures including knowledge of safe work practices and procedures, and use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret engineering drawings (including schematics, one-line diagrams, P&IDs, and function logic diagrams) and be able to create marked-up prints of field conditions.
  • A thorough understanding of plant control system design, construction, operations, maintenance, testing, or analysis in the utility industry, oil & gas industry, or marine propulsion is required.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation calibration and electrical testing, such as Transmitter Calibration, Dielectric Proof, and Insulation Resistance Testing, and various Transformer Testing, such as Winding Resistance, Turns Ratio, etc.
  • Familiarity with main power plant components and systems, including Turbines, Generators, Boilers, Motors, Pumps, Cooling Systems, Hydraulic Systems, Substation, and Transmission interconnection equipment, and earthing arrangements, etc.
  • Experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controls (PLC), Burner Management Systems (BMS), medium and low voltage switchgear, breakers, and power cables (up to 15KV), Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), and Motor Control Centers (MCC).
  • A working knowledge of equipment sizing and analysis calculations, life cycle management, relay protection schemes, and settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with internal/external customers and agencies, and various levels of management.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound business decisions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, including experience in direct supervision, and the ability to positively manage and motivate others.
  • Must also be available for emergency work 24/7 as required by system conditions.
  • Requires operation of a motor vehicle; a valid Driver’s License required.
  • Willingness and ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
  • Contact lenses are not permitted except for specific medical reasons.
  • OSHA-approved footwear is required.

  • B.Sc. degree in Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline is preferred.

Benefits

  • $145K - $160k + 15% bonus
