About The Position

The Instrument Turnover Technician is responsible for the efficient turnover, decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and equipment used within the ASC. This position supports surgical staff by ensuring instruments and supplies are properly processed, available, and maintained in accordance with infection control standards, regulatory requirements, and facility policies.

Requirements

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification through HSPA.
  • Previous experience in sterile processing, surgical services, endoscopy, or ambulatory surgery.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and surgical instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with sterilization monitoring and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to read and understand instrument processing instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of basic infection control practices.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and stand for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of sterilization and high-level disinfection principles.
  • Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced surgical environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate documentation and records.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, transport, and decontaminate used surgical instruments and equipment following established infection prevention protocols.
  • Inspect, clean, disinfect, assemble, package, and sterilize instruments according to manufacturer instructions for use (IFU).
  • Verify instrument set completeness and functionality before sterilization and use.
  • Operate sterilization equipment, including steam autoclaves and other approved sterilization systems.
  • Monitor and document sterilization cycles, biological indicators, chemical indicators, and quality assurance records.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, damaged instruments, and processing concerns promptly.
  • Foster a culture of patient safety, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Assist with efficient turnover of operating and procedure rooms between cases.
  • Clean and disinfect equipment, furniture, and surfaces according to facility protocols.
  • Restock procedure rooms with necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Prepare instrument trays and case carts based on procedure schedules.
  • Ensure readiness of operating rooms to support on-time case starts.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of surgical instruments, supplies, and sterilization materials.
  • Assist with tracking instrument repairs, replacements, and preventative maintenance.
  • Monitor stock levels and notify management of shortages.
  • Organize sterile storage areas to maintain compliance with infection control standards.
  • Adhere to OSHA, CDC, CMS, AAAHC, Joint Commission, and facility infection control guidelines as applicable.
  • Maintain accurate records related to instrument processing and sterilization activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits.
  • Follow all safety procedures regarding hazardous materials, sharps, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with ASC Director, surgeons, nurses, surgical technologists, and other ASC personnel.
  • Communicate effectively regarding instrument availability, repair needs, and processing priorities.
  • Provide excellent internal customer service to clinical staff.
