About The Position

EMH&T is currently looking for an Instrument Operator to join our Survey team based in our Columbus, OH office. This full-time role works under the direction of the Crew Chief, supporting the land survey process by physically assisting with the acquisition of survey data points or construction layout. Duties involve obtaining land survey data, such as angles, elevations, points, and contours using Trimble Robotic & GPS equipment. May compile notes and records of survey data obtained and work performed. Occasional overnight travel may be required with a per diem allowance. May be asked to assist with other physical efforts required to complete a land survey at the development site. EMH&T has the largest single location survey team in Central Ohio. Using Trimble Windows Mobile data collectors, robotic instruments, 3D scanning, geodetic GPS receivers (including real-time network, Kinematic, static surveying), our crews are equipped with the knowledge and the tools for every kind of horizontal and vertical land survey need. All EMH&T field personnel are subject to our safety-sensitive testing program. This means that your name will be placed in a pool for random screenings after your program training is completed. Details of the program are available to you prior to acceptance of the offer.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: 2-3 years of land surveying including the use of data collection, robotic total stations and GPS, preferred.
  • Possible overtime and occasional work out of town and/or overnight.
  • Must be legally authorized and permitted to work within the US without any restrictions or time limitations.
  • The ability to work outdoors all year in all types of weather conditions. Exposure to poisonous plants, outdoor insects, and allergens is likely.
  • The ability to walk and stand for most of the workday.
  • The ability to maneuver over rough, uneven terrain, ditches, roadsides, etc., while carrying 40-50 lbs. of supplies or survey equipment.
  • The stamina to work up to 8-10 hours per day for the entirety of the work year.
  • Capable of using a 4-lb. up to a 12-lb. sledgehammer to pound wooden stakes or metal pins into the ground. Hammering consumes an inconsistent portion of the workday from 2 hours to 8 hours a day and other days, there is no hammering needed.
  • Intermittent bending and squatting is required while hammering stakes, setting up equipment and/or clearing vegetation.
  • The ability to lift and set aside 60-100-lb. manholes using manhole hooks.
  • Capable of using a machete, brush hook, or other tool to cut light brush.
  • Capable of proper PPE, hard hat if required, gloves, boots, safety vests and high visibility clothing appropriate for the weather. No short pants allowed.

Responsibilities

  • Site construction staking or capturing survey coordinates and elevations.
  • Performs upkeep of certain equipment and maintains supplies for the survey crew. Will be given direction and will assist with other various field duties in the process of data collection.
  • Manages equipment and supplies to and from the work vehicles such as stakes, pins, paint, poles, etc. Carry and deliver supplies to the site.
  • Assist in running level rod or prism pole for the purpose of obtaining elevations and survey observations.
  • May be asked to assist with other physical efforts required to complete a land survey at the development site, such as clearing lines of sight or measuring underground structures.
