About The Position

The Instrument Man operates survey instruments daily with minimal supervision, focusing on increasing speed and accuracy. This role involves performing Coordinate Geometry (COGO) functions in the field, maintaining detailed field notes and sketches, and accurately recording survey data. The position requires marking points, measuring distances, and physically preparing the survey line by clearing brush and trees. The Instrument Man also performs other duties as directed by the Crew Chief and/or professional surveyor.

Requirements

  • Ability to operate survey instruments daily with little or no supervision
  • Proficiency in Coordinate Geometry (COGO) functions
  • Skill in making field book notes and sketches
  • Ability to measure distances using various tools
  • Capability to mark points and drive stakes at specified elevations
  • Physical ability to cut and clear brush and trees

Responsibilities

  • Operate survey instruments virtually every day with little or no supervision, while striving to increase speed and accuracy
  • Perform Coordinate Geometry (COGO) functions such as inverse, resection, stake a line, translate and rotate coordinates in the field
  • Make field book notes and sketches of data gathered at job site
  • Call out reading or writes station number and reading in notebook
  • Mark points of measurement with elevation, station number, or other identifying mark
  • Measure distance between survey points with steel tape, cloth tape or electronic instruments
  • Mark measuring points with keel (marking crayon), paint sticks, scratches, tacks, or stakes
  • Place stakes at designated points and drives them into ground at specified elevation
  • Cut and clears brush and trees from line of survey
  • Perform other duties as directed by Crew Chief and/or professional surveyor
