About The Position

The English Department at University of Detroit Mercy seeks applicants for a one-year instructor position with an annual teaching load of eight courses over fall and winter semesters. Teaching assignments are primarily first-year writing (rhetoric and composition) courses with the option of teaching one introductory literature, film, professional writing, or creative writing class per semester. Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in a related field
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching in the college setting
  • Knowledge of and commitment to best practices for teaching and mentoring a diverse student body

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in a related field
  • Demonstrated experience helping undergraduate students, including first-generation college students, successfully transition college-level coursework
  • Understanding of and commitment to the university’s mission, including teaching praxis that seeks to integrate students’ intellectual, spiritual, ethical and social development
  • Experience of assessment at the course and/or program level
  • ESL certification and/or significant experience teaching English language learners

Responsibilities

  • Teach eight courses over fall and winter semesters.
  • Teach primarily first-year writing (rhetoric and composition) courses.
  • Option to teach one introductory literature, film, professional writing, or creative writing class per semester.
