About The Position

The Department of Political Science at the University of Kansas is hiring instructors to teach virtual undergraduate courses in the Intelligence & National Security Studies program. This is an instructional adjunct faculty appointment that is not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. The position is a term appointment for the Spring 2027 semester. Renewal depends on unit needs, funding, and satisfactory performance, and may not exceed two continuous semesters. The position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement between the University of Kansas and United Academics of KU (UAKU), the exclusive representative. Kansas is a right-to-work state, and union membership is optional. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States before the position begins. Because of state employment laws, the university may be unable to hire fully remote workers residing outside Kansas; it currently cannot hire candidates residing in California, Delaware, Idaho, or Minnesota. The role has 100% instructional duties. Instructors teach in a specific field; develop course materials and manage syllabi; create lectures and assignments; grade student work; advise students; and hold office hours. Instructors are expected to collaborate with colleagues, remain current in their field, follow departmental, school/college, and university policies and procedures, and attend required instructor training provided by the Center for Teaching Excellence. The lecturer should be available for reasonable in-person or virtual appointments when students request meetings. A complete application includes a letter of application, a CV or resume detailing subject areas the applicant is qualified to teach or develop, and contact information for three professional references. A sample syllabus for a similar course is recommended. The letter should address syllabus development and management, creating lectures and assignments, grading and advising students or comparable experience, and the applicant’s overall teaching strategy.
