About The Position

SOWELA is seeking an Instructor for Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Technology within the School of Transportation & Applied Technology. This unclassified, faculty position involves providing high-quality instruction in both classroom and hands-on laboratory settings. The role requires maintaining student records, assessing learning outcomes, developing curriculum, advising students, and managing automotive laboratories. The instructor will also collaborate with various stakeholders to strengthen program offerings and ensure industry alignment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • 3 years of relevant industry experience
  • Ability to effectively utilize basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office 365 applications, to complete job-related tasks
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while instructing, demonstrating repair procedures, and supervising shop activities
  • Ability to walk and move frequently between classroom and automotive lab/shop areas
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move tools, parts, and equipment typically up to 25–50 pounds
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch to demonstrate repair techniques or inspect components under vehicles and in tight spaces
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required for operating automotive tools, diagnostic equipment, and performing mechanical tasks
  • Visual acuity to safely perform automotive service tasks, monitor student work, and identify mechanical issues or defects
  • Ability to work in environments with exposure to vehicle exhaust, fumes, oils, and moderate to high noise levels
  • Ability to wear and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and protective footwear
  • Ability to safely operate automotive tools and equipment, including lifts, jacks, diagnostic scanners, and power tools
  • Sufficient physical stamina to demonstrate automotive service procedures and oversee hands-on lab/shop instruction throughout the workday

Nice To Haves

  • A4, A5, A6, and G1 ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications are required
  • 3 years of relevant industry experience
  • Preferred Education : High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred Experience : 3 years of relevant industry experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality instruction in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Technology courses, including both classroom and hands-on laboratory experiences, in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, instructional documentation, and required reports, ensuring timely submission and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Assess student learning outcomes using a variety of evaluation methods and actively support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance student success and program effectiveness.
  • Develop, review, and update instructional standards, curriculum materials, and course outlines to ensure relevance, rigor, and alignment with current automotive technologies and practices.
  • Advise and mentor students in academic planning, career pathways, and workforce readiness, helping them prepare for employment and advancement in the automotive service industry.
  • Integrate and apply industry standards aligned with ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) to promote quality workmanship, safety, and adherence to professional best practices in all instructional activities.
  • Oversee and manage automotive laboratories, including the maintenance of tools, diagnostic equipment, inventory, and adherence to safe and efficient operational procedures.
  • Collaborate with faculty, industry partners, advisory committees, and community stakeholders to strengthen program offerings, ensure industry alignment, and support workforce development initiatives.
