About The Position

The mandate of the Safety, Regulatory, Training, and Development Service is to provide training and development, safety and regulatory compliance, and quality and continuous improvement of bus, para transit, and light rail services. Services and programs include appropriate safety and job training for transit employees and the compliance, development, and implementation of safety standards to protect the general public. You are responsible for designing and performing training programs that will foster employees' workplace performance, comply with health and safety workplace standards, and align with the core values of Transit Fleet & Facilities Maintenance Branch and OC Transpo. You maintain close liaison with the Occupational Health & Safety Branch and keep current on all applicable federal and provincial legislation, assist in evaluating training needs, and participate in the development of annual training plans and maintaining staff training records. You are responsible to review potential threats/hazards in each area, help create countermeasures to minimize potential risks and assess the training needs of employees. As a subject matter expert, you lead and attend meetings to resolve operational gaps in process, must keep up with changing safety laws, evaluate employee compliance, and otherwise help make each work area as safe as possible. The programs and techniques may vary depending on work area assigned. Adaptation of training is required.

Requirements

Completion of a 3-year college diploma in industrial engineering or another relevant, related field.
A minimum of five (5) years experience directly related to safety and technical training in the field of fleet maintenance and or industrial environments.
Commercial Vehicle Wheel Service Training Certificate approved in Ontario
Forklift Trainer Certificate
Mobile Elevating Work Platform Trainer Certification (MEWP)
Transportation of Dangerous Goods Instructor Certificate
Confined Space Instructor Certification
Bucket Truck Instructor Certification
High Voltage Electric Vehicle Safety Instructor Qualification/Certification
WHMIS Instructor Certification
WreckMaster Level 2/3 certification
Electric Vehicle – General Electric Safety Training
Current Standard First Aid, CPR and/or AED certificates
Valid Ontario unrestricted CZ class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no demerit points accumulated, as per City of Ottawa corporate standard
Signing Authority under the MTO Driver Certification Program
Fleet Driver Trainer/Instructor certification (PRIDE or equivalent MTO-approved course)
Certified Defensive Driving Course Instructor
Certified Air Brake Instructor
Certificate in Adult Education
Fall Protection/Arrest Instructor certificate
Current Ontario Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) certificate card
Good working knowledge of Federal and Provincial Regulations
City policies and procedures affecting Transit maintenance operations
Technologies and procedures governing transit vehicle maintenance
Instructional techniques used in adult education
Extensive knowledge of the vehicle components and systems and the standard methods
Tools, equipment, various tools and forklift and materials used in the trades
Sound knowledge of maintenance procedures for all vehicle system components
Strong computer literacy in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment including the use of Ozone, the Internet and FMIS
Knowledge of SAP information management system and reporting capabilities
Safe work practices
Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
Workplace hazards and their associated controls, as well as an understanding of how to demonstrate that knowledge to others
Safety management systems
Adult learning principles and various learning styles
Advanced technical knowledge of transit vehicles and industrial equipment
Vehicle components and systems and the standard methods, tools, equipment and materials used in the truck and coach/automotive repair industry
Computer literacy in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment

CVMA Commercial Vehicle Maintenance Agreement (Mexico-USA-Canada) Inspection criteria
General Knowledge of emergency planning and evacuation
Knowledge in developing learning solutions using emerging instructional technologies, including equipment to develop multimedia presentations
Knowledge of building support systems
Ability to work outside in inclement weather conditions, frequent mounting and dismounting of heavy equipment, travel regularly throughout the city.
Ability to organize and disseminate vast amounts of information to support new technologies, safe work practices within the transit organization
Work independently, with minimal direction, and collaboratively with all staff in a unionized, team environment
